Overwatch 2 fans have started a discussion about the missing Gothenburg map. The map was teased in 2019 as a possible launch map for Overwatch 2, but many things about the game have changed in the years since that announcement.

With Ramattra and the new Shambali map now out, Overwatch 2 fans are already looking toward the future at what Blizzard could be bringing to the game next. One discussion has led fans to look back to the announcement trailer for Overwatch 2 which was revealed during BlizzCon 2019 for a map that was previously teased. After the reveal trailer, fans were given a quick glimpse at the Gothenburg map by developers, but it hasn't been seen in any Overwatch 2 material since.

Redditor OhOliver23 brought up the topic in r/Overwatch where they were informed that Gothenburg may have been built as an Assault (2CP) map before that map type was retired for Overwatch 2. Because of that, the map is likely being reworked to suit another map type, but fans are still clamoring for an update about the home of Torbjorn and Brigitte Lindholm. It was teased to have Torbjorn's workshop and a neighborhood named after the Lindholms, and it could provide even more bits of lore and hero teases when it finally gets released.

The conversation on the Reddit post also turns into a discussion of the removal of 2CP maps from the game. Despite many protests about the existence of the map type, it still has fans that defend it to this day. But the consensus opinion among these Overwatch fans is that they do not want to see it become a Push map. The post-launch release schedule for Overwatch 2 maps so far has been Esperanca (Push) and Shambali (Escort). Overwatch 2 has not released a new Control map yet, so Gothenburg may be farther along in the release line than fans think. It may be a Hybrid map, but additional architecture would need to be added to expand the map from its initial 2CP foundation.

With Overwatch 2's current map pool schedule even withholding Overwatch 1 maps that haven't yet made their debut in the new game like Havana, it's hard to judge when Gothenburg could be added to the game. News on this map may also be delayed further as Overwatch 2 PvE content is being worked on and could be expected at any point in 2023. With fans already up in arms about Overwatch 2's value without the promised PvE content, adding Gothenburg may be way down on the content priority list.

Overwatch 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
