Senior Overwatch 2 developer Jon Spector recently expressed his interest in including Fortnite-style crossovers in the game. While his statements did not confirm that Overwatch 2 will feature a crossover with other franchises, it seems to be something that Blizzard is seriously considering for the upcoming game.

Developers announced Overwatch 2 during BlizzCon in 2019. Originally intended to release as a separate game with a shared PvP multiplayer, the game is now set to be a free-to-play replacement for the original, with Blizzard planning to shut down Overwatch’s servers and transfer player’s cosmetics and in-game currency to Overwatch 2. The game releases in early access on October 4th.

In a recent interview, Game Informer contributor Alex Van Aken asked Blizzard VP and Overwatch 2 head Jon Spector his opinion on bringing crossover content to the upcoming multiplayer FPS. “We’ve seen some really fun examples out there of games working with other brands or other games,” said Spector. “I’m a big anime nerd myself. I think it’s super cool when I see Naruto appear in Fortnite. I don’t even play Fortnite, but that’s awesome.” While Spector did not reveal any specific plans to bring outside properties into Overwatch 2, he confirmed that it’s a possibility that Blizzard is interested in exploring.

Fortnite Naruto crossover

Multiplayer shooters like Epic Games’ Fortnite and Activision’s Call of Duty: Warzone have both seen major success with crossover events in the past. The above-mentioned Naruto event wasn’t Fortnite’s only anime crossover, with a Dragon Ball Z event happening back in August. Meanwhile, Warzone’s crossovers have included franchises like Judge Dredd and celebrities like Snoop Dog. So it would not be surprising for the developers of Overwatch 2 to look at what the other games are doing and consider following suit.

However, Spector stressed that if Blizzard decides to introduce crossover events in Overwatch 2, the team would be careful to ensure that it was a good fit for the game. He emphasized that any future crossovers will be things the developers are interested in, rather than simply using Overwatch 2 as paid advertising space for other properties. It’s unclear how exactly Spector imagines that would work, but it could mean that the developers of Overwatch 2 will try to avoid any particularly jarring crossovers. Then again, it is not as if bizarre video game crossovers haven’t been successful before.

He also talked about how the developers of Overwatch 2 hope to deliver more new content regularly. Blizzard hopes to release a new Season every nine weeks, with Overwatch 2’s Season 1 featuring a Halloween event and cyberpunk-inspired cosmetics. Spector explained that Blizzard hopes to sustain a steady stream of content updates for years to come while also ensuring the game remains fair and fun to play regardless of how much money a player spends.

Overwatch 2 launches in early access on October 4th for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
