Overwatch 2 is currently in the midst of its Halloween Terror event, and the response to the content has been mixed. While many are loving the unique Wrath of the Bride mission, others are disappointed by a lack of earnable skins and a limited number of new cosmetics (with the two new skins also being very pricey). Though it remains to be seen how future events are handled, fans should not be shocked if some crossover-focused content comes around.

Crossovers were mentioned by Overwatch 2 lead Jon Spector, with Spector specifically mentioning the possibility of working with “other brands and other games.” Fortnite’s Naruto crossover was specifically name-dropped, and though no specifics were provided as to any crossover plans, the fact that Blizzard has any interest in the idea at all means there is a chance that programs involving other franchises could happen. If Overwatch 2 does embrace crossovers, a few events would fit the hero shooter particularly well.

Marvel Content Within Overwatch

Since many artists have already come up with skin concepts that combine Overwatch and Marvel heroes, this would be one of the first events worth exploring. Widowmaker works as Spider-Gwen, Reinhardt or Torbjorn could become Thor, and Moira would perfectly embody Scarlet Witch. Junker Queen is the perfect size for a She-Hulk skin, and Winston is practically begging to become Beast from X-Men. Doomfist as Thanos is the best example of all, as the character’s signature gauntlet could be given some Infinity Stones to complete the look.

If Blizzard wanted to turn Marvel content into a proper event, a Civil War-inspired mode could be fun to see. This arcade mode could see two teams with set heroes, and every hero on both sides could be wearing a Marvel-themed skin. The fighting could take place on maps that have been given a Marvel aesthetic, like a version of Numbani that is adjusted to look like Wakanda, with Black Panther statues placed throughout the area.

Star Wars Content In Overwatch

Having Overwatch heroes cosplay as Star Wars characters is something players have already considered, with a lightsaber-wielding Genji imagined through some fan art several months back. The outlaw Cassidy would work well as the smuggler Han Solo, while Mercy’s staff already makes her a fine choice for Rey. The edgy Reaper is begging to become Kylo Ren given his hood and mask, while Omnics like Bastion and Zenyatta can easily transform into droids like R2-D2 and C-3PO.

Video Game Crossovers in Overwatch

Obviously, video game crossovers make perfect sense for Overwatch 2, as Fortnite’s own crossover content sees Epic Games teaming up with Bungie and other game studios quite frequently. The most likely options are Microsoft-owned franchises given the company’s purchase of Activision Blizzard, and a few quickly jump to mind. Brotherhood of Steel Power Armor for Reinhardt would be an easy crossover, as would Fallout Vault suits for Ashe and Bob. Soldier 76 could get a makeover to look like Ghost from Call of Duty, while Halo and Gears of War provide even more options.

Outside the games that fall under the Microsoft umbrella, franchises like Borderlands could merge well with Overwatch. Masked characters like Roadhog would make for great Psychos, while Kiriko’s attitude and abilities would help her be a good platform for a Siren skin like Maya. Zer0 is a no-brainer for a Genji skin, just like the mech-using Moze has a counterpart in D.Va. A potential gameplay event could play on the series’ loot focus, too, giving Blizzard some fun options beyond cosmetics. Obviously, this is just scratching the surface for potential crossovers, as anime, movies, and TV are also on the table. While more paid cosmetics would only add to the ongoing controversy around the game’s monetization, Overwatch 2 crossovers certainly have potential.

Overwatch 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
