One Overwatch 2 player has made the discovery that players of Blizzard's popular online FPS may, strangely enough, have the opportunity to earn Overwatch Coins faster simply by playing World of Warcraft instead. The new virtual currency for the game was just one of the many new features introduced with the recent early access launch of Overwatch 2 last month.

Alongside the new shop system and battle pass, Overwatch 2's microtransaction-based Overwatch Coins haven't been received too well by the community. Due to the game's transition to a free-to-play title for all players, monetization has shifted largely to the sale of individual skins and cosmetic bundles which players can buy using Overwatch Coins. Unfortunately, players consider these cosmetics to be sold at far too high a price, with some bundles costing up to around $20 or more. With loot boxes removed, players have virtually no way of reliably collecting skins other than saving up small amounts of Coins obtainable for free by completing weekly challenges.

That is, until the user Everdale on Reddit found that there is actually a way to earn Overwatch Coins by playing World of Warcraft. In fact, players that have invested a lot of time into Blizzard's mammoth MMORPG could even find themselves earning far more of Overwatch 2's virtual credits from World of Warcraft than Overwatch 2. This is due to a feature in World of Warcraft which allows players to purchase tokens with in-game gold that can then be converted into Battle.net balance, which in turn can be used to purchase currencies found in other titles from Blizzard.

Though the process works, players should be aware that the conversion rate between World of Warcraft tokens and Battle.net currency is fairly low, and fans will still need to pay a monthly subscription if they hope to get the most out of World of Warcraft. Still, players with efficient gold farms or those who are content enough to simply grind for gold in the game will theoretically be able to make enough Overwatch Coins for the investment to be worth it.

Whether a fan of World of Warcraft or not, most in the Overwatch 2 community agree that Blizzard needs to do something about the current shop prices, and the fact that players can earn more Overwatch Coins by playing a completely different game just highlights how absurd the currency situation is in Overwatch 2.

That said, a lot of players believe that the high cost of skins is a fair trade-off if it means Overwatch 2 being otherwise free for everybody to play. Whether Blizzard will address the price complaints in the future is yet to be seen, but the decision at least allows fans to enjoy seeing Overwatch 2 at a record high in terms of players.

Overwatch 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
