The developers of Overwatch 2 detailed upcoming changes that will occur in the game's matchmaking system. Overwatch 2 was released this year, and after a troubled debut Blizzard continues to work to deliver a good gaming experience.

There is always a lot going on in Blizzard's team-based shooter, often resulting in major nerfs for heroes in Overwatch 2. Character balancing is a very important factor in the experience of a competitive game, and it is no different with Overwatch 2. In a recent post on the official blog, however, Blizzard talked about upcoming matchmaking changes, another factor that also greatly influences matches.

In the game's official blog the devs explain that the ultimate goal is to get players in matches as fun and fair as possible quickly. Overwatch 2's competitive experience still needs to improve, and in this case, the systems that determine how a player's MMR is created and adjusted when playing any mode have been tweaked. New players are now paired with players who are equivalent to Bronze 5 rank. This allows these players to win more often, making the feel of the matches fairer.

Overwatch 2 Devs Detail Upcoming Changes to Matchmaking System

While Overwatch 2 does not solve the balancing problem, another change in matchmaking was the introduction of the "streak modifier system". With it, the player will gain MMR faster when winning 50% of matches. This effect is mitigated when the system senses that the player is entering fair matches relative to his MMR. A future change for Overwatch 2 will see the game trying to find pairs of players with similar ratings in each role. That is, if a team has a damage player whose MMR is at a certain number, the system will try to find an opposing team with a damage player of similar MMR.

Balancing a competitive game is no easy task, and Overwatch 2 is no different. Blizzard's shooter inherited the player base from the first game and has received a large influx of new players. The proof of the increased player base, for example, is in the impressive first month of Overwatch 2. So Blizzard shows that it has been working on changes to make the experience of new players fairer. These changes, in turn, have the potential to encourage newcomers to spend more time playing. Despite the problems that Overwatch 2 faced in the beginning, it is always satisfying for a player base to see that the devs are actively working on the game.

Overwatch 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
