An Overwatch 2 developer has hinted at the possibility of upcoming tweaks aimed to improve the efficacy of some of the game's struggling tanks. While the game provides a host of heroes to choose from, the nature of Overwatch 2 will inevitably lead to certain characters being at the top of the meta, funneling more players into only a handful of choices. In their never-ending mission to keep things balanced - or shake things up - developers appear to be making a few changes.

After nearly a month of gameplay, players are beginning to understand the nuances of their favorite Overwatch 2 heroes. With this understanding, several characters stand out among the rest. At the moment, heroes like Zarya and the ever-popular D.Va are ruling the tank meta, while a host of other characters are being left by the wayside. The decision to reduce team size to five players instead of six, thus leaving only one tank, has further encouraged players to choose only from the most feasible options.

Unlike its predecessor, Overwatch 2 is taking a seasonal approach, and each new beginning is the perfect time to drop new content and updates. Recently, in a twitter Q&A, lead hero designer Alec Dawson gave fans a peek at what could be in the works for the coming second season. Alluding to possible new characters and content, Dawson said tanks like Doomfist, Junker Queen, and Wrecking Ball will likely require buffs to allow them to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with both current tanks and possible newcomers.

The developers are looking at tweaks to Doomfist's Rocket Punch ability, a huge part of his damage output and enemy positioning strategy. The move works together with the character's Power Block, which both protects Doomfist and empowers his Rocket Punch. Dawson said the planned buffs would aim to allow for more powered-up punches. Junker Queen has also consistently lagged behind and proposed buffs will "look at her self-efficacy vs. providing sustain for [the] whole team." Wrecking Ball is both silly and devastating, and, according to Dawson, correctly balancing him is precarious work. But aside from stating that the team was taking a look at the character, he didn't go into further detail.

Both players and developers are beginning to understand Overwatch 2 hero balance, and though it's a constant effort, hopefully this is the start of ironing out major launch kinks. It was a shame to see new addition Junker Queen struggling to compete with her peers, so it's great that early effort is going into her improvement.

Character balancing issue are far from the only thing Blizzard has to contend with right now though. After a rough launch, the issues from which are still being sorted through, and ongoing frustrations over the free-to-play monetization, fans can only hope the game finds a balance not only with its heroes, but its overall structure.

Overwatch 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
