Overwatch has undergone a metamorphosis since it transitioned into the long-awaited sequel of Overwatch 2. Long gone are the 6v6 brawls, instead replaced by 5v5 team compositions designed to shorten player queue times and make team fights more engaging.

However, the new team compositions put more pressure on players fond of the support category, as they may struggle to keep their team and solo Tank alive. There are currently only eight Support characters in Overwatch 2, so the choices on what can be played are limited. Each Support hero has a unique Ultimate ability, but some are more useful than others.

8 Brigitte's Rally

Overwatch 2, Brigitte and Reinhardt

It is no secret that Brigitte is one of the weakest supports in the meta right now. Caught in an awkward limbo of being an off-tank/off-support hybrid, there is no real category that Brigitte fits into. Her weak shield and lackluster healing make her an easy target for the enemy team. While Reinhardt is the main tank she synergizes well with, there are often better options such as D.Va and Orisa due to the enforced solo Tank composition.

As a result, Brigitte's Ultimate, Rally, is one of the weakest in the Support category. Rally allows Brigitte and her team to move faster, providing overhealth for her allies that lasts until it is damaged. It is a good Ultimate to use aggressively, but there are much better Support options with more utility. Rally is also easily countered by high-damaging Ultimates, like Pharah's Rocket Barrage or Reaper's Death Blossom, quickly decimating the bonus armor and overhealth Brigitte provides.

7 Baptiste's Amplification Matrix

Overwatch 2, Baptiste

Baptiste is a rising star in Overwatch 2, quickly becoming one of the most popular main support heroes. With his suave personality, Baptiste has ample utility to aid his allies in a pinch with his Regenerative Burst, Immortality Field and Biotic Launcher.

Amplification Matrix is Baptiste's Ultimate ability. He projects a windowed matrix that will double the damage and healing capabilities of any allied projectile that passes through it. It can be used in conjunction with offensive abilities like Solider 76's Ultimate or to provide life-saving healing for allies. The trouble is Amplification Matrix needs to be aimed and placed manually. In a high-stress situation, it can be easy for players to misplace it, either too far forward or in the wrong place entirely, rendering it useless. Luckily, Baptiste's Ultimate recharges reasonably quickly!

6 Moira's Coalescence

Overwatch 2, Moira

One of the most controversial heroes in Overwatch 2's meta right now is Moira. Dubbed DPS Moira, many players focus on damage dealing rather than the essential supportive and healing elements of Moira's kit. Moira, as a whole, is the second-best main healer in the game, held back by her limited resource healing.

Moira's Ultimate, Coalescence is a powerhouse of damage-dealing and healing in one long beam. It is ideally used to heal allies that are grouped up, as the straight biotic beam passes through both friendly teammates and the enemy team, even piercing through their shields! Her Ultimate can, however, easily be canceled by crowd-control abilities like Earthshatter, Chain Hook, Sleep Dart, and more, making it one of the weaker Ultimates on this list.

5 Mercy's Valkyrie

Mercy from Overwatch 2 holding the Caduceus Blaster

Mercy is one of the most iconic characters in the Overwatch universe, especially with her Resurrection ability. She is often an excellent support pick used to pocket a DPS carry. Her Ultimate Valkyrie increases her abilities, so her beam will interconnect between allies in proximity, allowing for more significant healing and damage-boosting potential.

Using Mercy's Ultimate, Valkyrie allows her to become airborne and dramatically reduces the cooldown of her Guardian Angel so that she can fly between teammates. However, Valkyrie also makes her a prime target for a Widowmaker, or a Cassidy High Noon Ultimate, which can easily pick her out of the sky. Mercy also gets infinite ammo for her Caduceus Blaster during Valkyrie's duration, allowing the Battle Mercy to be born. It can be easy to tunnel-vision and attack enemies, ignoring the remainder of her team, which may need her healing.

4 Lucio's Sound Barrier

Overwatch 2, Lucio Sound Barrier

Lucio has one of the most interesting character designs in Overwatch 2. He is one of the slipperiest Supports with his Wall Riding ability, which can be challenging to master. Lucio is versatile and always a great pick. He combines passive healing with movement speed buffs and strong defensive Ultimate to create a behemoth of a Support that is not to be taken lightly.

Lucio's Sound Barrier grants a considerable amount of temporary overhealth to all allies within a 30-meter radius. It's a great defensive Ultimate that can save the skins of allies under pressure from high burst damage, like Reaper's Death Blossom or Zarya's Graviton Surge. However, Lucio's Ultimate can easily be canceled if he cannot cast it before dying, making him a prime target for the enemy. Sound Barrier also takes some time to charge, making it all the more heartbreaking if wasted.

3 Kiriko's Kitsune Rush

overwatch 2 kiriko ult

As the first successful season of Overwatch 2 draws to a close, players are finally getting to grips with the new potent hero, Kiriko, and her kit. She has some incredible utility, like teleporting to allies, and most importantly, her cleanse, which negates the effects of any negative debuffs like Ana's Biotic Grenade while providing brief invulnerability.

Kiriko's Kitsune Rush summons a Fox Spirit that sprints forward, providing massive movement and attack speed bonuses for allies standing in its path. It also dramatically reduces cooldown times for allies. It pairs well with heroes like Soldier: 76, Sojourn, and Bastion. The main downside of Kitsune Rush is that it has a long charge time, so Kiriko players need to use their Ultimate wisely.

2 Ana's Nano Boost

Overwatch 2, Ana

Out of the eight support heroes currently on the Overwatch 2 roster, Ana is potentially the hardest to master but incredibly rewarding to play. Her kit can be particularly challenging, with perfect timing being crucial. Her Sleep Dart can stop the enemy in their tracks, and if used correctly, her Biotic Grenade can negate all healing effects for the enemy team.

Ana truly shines through the effective use of Nano Boost, but it can be wasted if the chosen ally dies before Nano hits them or can be given to the wrong person. Nano Boost allows Ana's chosen ally to take less damage while they deal more. It also heals them back up, which is perfect for an ally gunned head-first into the enemy with no escape routes. Nano Boost famously synergizes well with champions like Genji or Reinhardt due to their high-damage outputs.

1 Zenyatta's Transcendence

Overwatch 2, Transcendence

Zenyatta is one of the most complex heroes in Overwatch despite his simplistic-looking kit, and he can truly shine in the right circumstances. Upon first appearance, Zenyatta looks extremely weak and is a prime target with his low health pool and lack of mobility.

However, the best Ultimate in the game easily belongs to Zenyatta, nullifying damage from some of the strongest heroes. This peaceful omnic monk can use Transcendence, which rapidly heals up all allies as long as they stay within his aura, and he becomes invulnerable for a short duration. It counters most offensive Ultimates and abilities, and Transcendence cannot be interrupted, making it the best defensive Support Ultimate in Overwatch 2.

Overwatch 2 is free-to-play on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
