Overwatch 2 is in quite a divisive spot right now. On the one hand, a good portion of the fan-base is loving the game and its various new changes, but on the other hand, some fans are disappointed with the game's free-to-play approach, its Battle Pass system, its microtransactions, and its relentless server issues. Most players are landing about in the middle of that scale at the minute, but with just a few tweaks to the Battle Pass and the game's currency system, Overwatch 2 could end up being one of the best multiplayer games of the year.

Since 2016, the first Overwatch used a loot box system to grant players new skins. With every new level, players could open one new loot box, which could potentially land them a rare or legendary skin, emotes, or sprays. This system in itself was pretty controversial at the time, with ratings boards being unsure if this new approach to monetization was technically gambling. Overwatch 2 has completely removed this loot box system, and has instead introduced an 80-tier Battle Pass, which may not actually offer enough of a grind for some players.

Overwatch 2's Battle Pass Grind Might Not Be Enough

Much like the first Overwatch, Blizzard has seemingly designed Overwatch 2 to be an endless game, leaning closely to the live-service approach used by long-running multiplayer games like Fortnite. However, unlike Fortnite, Overwatch 2's Battle Pass may not offer enough content for die-hard fans. The Battle Pass in Overwatch 2 only has 80 tiers. While this is sure to be more than enough for casual gamers, those who plan on playing Overwatch 2 heavily over the next few weeks will likely finish the Battle Pass quite quickly. And once players have finished the Battle Pass, there's little incentive to keep grinding away.

With Overwatch 2's current Seasons lasting about nine weeks, this could potentially lead to some hardcore players being finished with the Battle Pass early, needing to wait well over a month for new cosmetics and a reason to come back to the game aside from its gameplay. Blizzard seems pretty adamant about keeping loot boxes out of Overwatch 2, but their return could be the exact thing the game needs.

Bringing loot boxes back to Overwatch 2 could be the perfect incentive to keep die-hard fans playing long after they've unlocked every tier on the Battle Pass. To keep the Battle Pass worthwhile, Blizzard could put restrictions on the loot boxes' contents, such as only allowing rare items to be unlocked and no legendaries. The same loot box progression system from the first Overwatch would work as well in the sequel, with one being awarded per level-up and players getting a loot box XP bar once the battle pass is done.

It would also help if Blizzard tweaked Overwatch 2's currency system a little so that players could unlock legendary skins at a slightly faster rate. For instance, Overwatch 2 could grant players coins for grinding out a certain number of matches, as opposed to the current system which just gives players a measly number of coins for completing weekly challenges. This is one of the most controversial aspects of Overwatch 2, with fans discovering that it would take a total of five years to unlock just all of Kiriko's skins at this current rate. If Overwatch 2 started to give players 100 coins for every 100 matches played, then that would at least be an incentive to keep playing and grinding away.

Overwatch 2 is now available on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
