Overwatch 2 will not be overwriting Overwatch 1's achievement list when it launches in early access on October 4, but it will still be coming with new goals for players to complete. With Overwatch 2 making dramatic changes to Overwatch's core gameplay, like moving from a 6v6 set-up to 5v5 and implementing major hero reworks, it's been unclear how this may impact achievements. And since Overwatch 2 is a sequel, there's been some question about if it will be launching with a brand-new set of achievements and trophies.

Blizzard's Jon Spector offered Game Rant some clarification on the matter, explaining that Overwatch 1 achievements/trophies are "generally being carried forward." Fans will have to wait for launch to get a clearer picture of what that's going to look like, but in the meantime, the game will be adding new challenges for players to complete that should scratch a similar itch. To help complete the Overwatch 2 Battle Pass, players can tackle Daily, Weekly, Seasonal, Lifetime, and Hero-specific challenges, which come in the form of achievement-like objectives.

Truly dedicated Overwatch 2 players that manage to complete the Season 1 Battle Pass will have even more to do. It was also confirmed that Overwatch 2 will have a prestige system for those that complete the Battle Pass, with hardcore players able to earn eight titles by progressing through it. These titles can only be earned in the season that they're added to the game, and they can effectively be used as bragging rights.

overwatch 2 challenges

This should satisfy some fans who enjoy guided challenges to complete in multiplayer-centric games like Overwatch, but others may have been hoping for the sequel to get a completely brand-new list of achievements and trophies. That doesn't seem like it will be the case, but it's likely that the sequel will carry on as the original game did, adding new achievements and trophies to coincide with the introduction of new heroes. However, that has yet to be confirmed.

If Overwatch 2 continues in the tradition of the original when it comes to achievements and trophies, then fans might have a decent chunk of new ones to unlock come the October 4 early access launch date. That day will see the introduction of three brand-new heroes (Sojourn, Junker Queen, and Kiriko), plus the hero reworks will potentially necessitate changes to existing achievements/trophies.

Overwatch fans will have to wait for October 4 to roll around to see how it all goes down for themselves.

Overwatch 2 launches in early access on October 4 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
