Owners of the original Overwatch disc are doing strange things with it now that it no longer functions, like using it as a pizza cutter and a drink coaster. Blizzard recently launched Overwatch 2 to the masses as a free-to-play game, completely replacing the first game. This has effectively made existing Overwatch 1 discs pointless, as gamers no longer need the disc to boot up the hero-shooter game.
Blizzard's decision to overwrite Overwatch 1 with Overwatch 2 has been met with mixed reactions by the community. Overwatch 2 makes rather drastic changes to the experience, like dropping the number of heroes per team from six to five, and completely changing how monetization works. There are those who prefer these changes, but there are others who wish that they could still go back to the way Overwatch was before.
Regardless, the fact of the matter is that Overwatch 1 discs are useless now beyond collector's items. As a result, some gamers have been doing weird things with their copies of the game, like Reddit user Blast_Typhon, for instance. They uploaded an image of themselves using the Overwatch 1 disc to slice pizza. The post has received 3.6 thousand upvotes at the time of this writing.
Reddit user ramavalos90 came up with another way to put their copy of the original Overwatch game to use. Instead of using the Overwatch 1 disc as a pizza cutter like Blast_Typhon, they decided to use it as a coaster for their drink. Their post has amassed over 11,000 upvotes so far, so it seems many in the community agree that this is an acceptable way to use the disc in the wake of Overwatch 2's launch.
Retailer GameStop has its own methods of dealing with remaining Overwatch 1 discs. A GameStop employee uploaded a video showing that the company has ordered its stores to destroy remaining copies of Overwatch. This is a fairly standard practice when something like this happens, though some fans may be able to get a copy of Overwatch 1 from their local GameStop for pennies or even free since the stores are going to destroy them anyway. That's what happened with Bablyon's Fall at least, a failed live service game from PlatinumGames and Square Enix that's shutting down next year.
Those who have played the original Overwatch regularly these past six years may be sad to see the discs being destroyed or used as a pizza cutter. After all, Overwatch was hugely popular when it first launched, and so there may be some sentimental value there. Fans may no longer need their discs to access the free-to-play Overwatch 2, but they still may want to hold on to it as a keepsake.
