The afterword of the series’ 14th volume stated that the light novels would conclude with the release of the 17th volume. Volume 14 was released in Japan on March 12, 2020, and has yet to be released in English.

Maruyama first serialized the novels in 2010 with illustrations by so-bin, via novel publishing website Arcadia as well as the user-generated novel publishing website, Shōsetsuka ni Narō. Enterbrain took over publishing the series after acquiring Shōsetsuka ni Narō in 2011.

A manga adaptation written by Satoshi Ōshio and illustrated by Hugin Miyama began serialization in Kadokawa Shoten’s Comp Ace magazine in 2014. The manga has amassed 15 collected volumes throughout its run so far.

An anime adaptation animated by Studio madhouse first aired during the Summer 2015 season. Three 13-episode seasons have aired, with the fourth season announced in May 2021. Naoyuki Itō (No Guns Life, Re: Cutie Honey) directed the series, with Yukie Sugawara (Kaguya-sama: Love is War, The Irregular at Magic High School) serving as scriptwriter.

A film series set to cover the Holy Kingdom Arc was announced alongside the fourth season. No release window has been announced as of yet. Madhouse previously released two recap films, The Undead King & The Dark Warrior in 2017.

Yen Press publishes the light novel and manga series in English. Funimation licenses the anime series in English, alongside the recap films and the 2016 OVA.
