Last month, publisher Starbreeze Studios announced that the console version of Overkill's The Walking Dead is postponed indefinitely due to the fact that the game's PC release performed poorly. Since then, the possibility of the game's launch to the PS4 and Xbox One became increasingly unlikely as time went by.

Several days ago, conflicting reports surfaced online that the console version of the game was apparently canceled. This was quickly disputed by Starbreeze Studios saying that the console version of Overkill's The Walking Dead is not canceled but is "purely postponed whilst development is on-going." Now, Skybound Entertainment, the owner of The Walking Dead license, puts the issue to rest by revealing that Overkill's The Walking Dead is now officially canceled for consoles and that support for the PC version of the game will be discontinued.

Skybound's statement revealed that it has worked hard with Starbreeze Studios to resolve the plethora of issues found in Overkill's The Walking Dead. Unfortunately, Starbreeze was unable to deliver a "quality" product, given that the game did not meet the standards of Skybound Entertainment. As of now, Skybound is currently looking for alternative developers to provide a proper video game for The Walking Dead franchise.

"We are exceedingly sorry to our fans and share their disappointment in the game. We remain dedicated to providing our fans with the most premium quality content we can offer, and we will continue to look for alternative options for the IP."

While the poor performance on the PC and the eventual cancellation of the game on other platforms may seem surprising to some, several former and current developers on Starbreeze already knew that Overkill's The Walking Dead was doomed to fail right from the get-go. Employees revealed that the mismanagement from the design team was the primary factor to the game's lackluster appeal to the audience it is trying to reach.

Given the closure of Telltale Games (the developer of another series of The Walking Dead games) last year, and now the cancellation of Overkill's The Walking Dead, it will be interesting to see how Skybound and its future partner will be able to shake off the bad reputation from previous games based on the popular zombie franchise. As of the moment, it is still unknown whether Skybound Entertainment already has developers in mind to take over the reins of producing a proper video game based on The Walking Dead.
