Not too long ago, it was reported that Overkill's The Walking Dead's console versions had been cancelled. Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) had apparently sent out emails to certain users offering refunds for pre-orders of the PlayStation 4 iteration after SIE stated it had received information from the publisher that the game had been cancelled. According to the PS4 and Xbox One versions' publisher, 505 Games, that isn't the case at all, as development for the four player co-op action FPS for consoles still seems to be occurring.

According to a statement made by 505 Games, Overkill's The Walking Dead on console "has not been cancelled", with the company declaring that the title has been "purely postponed whilst development is on-going". This supports a previous position held by both 505 and Starbreeze Studios that the PS4 and Xbox One versions have been delayed indefinitely, and not nixed outright.

While this statement from 505 Games may provide some reassurance to fans looking forward to Overkill's The Walking Dead on PS4 and Xbox One, it's safe to presume that the title won't be releasing on the two platforms any time soon. After all, the first-person shooter's launch on PC hasn't fared too well, so not only do resources need to be allocated to optimize the game for console ports, but also they will need to be used on fixing the PC version, too.

Furthermore, Starbreeze Studios' recent financial struggles likely won't help move production along any faster for the console versions for Overkill's The Walking Dead. As it so happens, the company filed for reconstruction back in December 2018, and removed its CEO after sales projections for Overkill’s TWD were lower than expected.

Adding to Overkill's The Walking Dead's console development woes is the fact that after the game had launched on PC, some current and former Starbreeze Studios employees opened up about the title's rough production process, which cast doubt on the viability of the game's console ports. Some revealed that they had been subject to months of crunch development for a project that seemed doomed to fail from the start, with these team members' overall perspective on Overkill's TWD painting a bleak picture of the PS4 and Xbox One versions' futures.

All things considered, there's no telling how much longer console players anticipating Overkill's The Walking Dead will have to wait for the game's arrival on PS4 and Xbox One, as 505 Games has yet to even offer a revised launch window for the ports. With this being the case, we will have to sit tight and find out when the console versions' publisher decides that it is the right time for the title's launch on both Sony and Microsoft's systems.

Overkill's The Walking Dead is available now on PC, with PS4 and Xbox One versions coming at an indefinite date.
