[UPDATE: According to an announcement from 505 Games, Overkill's The Walking Dead has not been cancelled for PS4 or Xbox One, as the console versions have been "purely postponed". The original story continues below.]

About a month ago, Starbreeze Studios announced its decision for Overkill's The Walking Dead to be postponed indefinitely on PS4 and Xbox One. Now, it looks as if the inevitable fate for the game's console editions has arrived, for it seems as though Starbreeze has declared that the four player co-op action FPS is cancelled on the PS4, with the Xbox One iteration likely to follow.

This much has been revealed through emails Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) supposedly sent out to PlayStation 4 customers who pre-ordered Overkill's The Walking Dead on the platform. In these messages, SIE has stated it is refunding those players, as "the publisher has notified [Sony] that the game is cancelled". Apparently, PS4 users who reserved a copy should receive a refund to their original payment source over the next five to seven business days.

It's worth noting that neither Overkill Software nor Starbreeze Studios have yet to publicly announce the current status of Overkill's The Walking Dead for either the Sony or Microsoft console. That said, prior to player reports of this cancellation on PS4, Starbreeze issued a press release about a month back to say that the console release hiatus had been due to it “evaluating and reviewing" the way in which Overkill's The Walking Dead was performing on the systems. With this being the case, it sounds as if the PS4 and Xbox One versions simply hasn't met the company's standards to deem the project fit to publish.

As previously mentioned, it appeared as if the writing was already on the wall when it came to the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Overkill's The Walking Dead never making it out the door. The game's launch on PC had already received a poor reception, which ultimately led to certain financial struggles within Starbreeze. As it so happens, the company filed for reconstruction back in December 2018, and removed its CEO after sales projections for Overkill's TWD were lower than expected.

What's more is that following the launch of the PC version for Overkill's The Walking Dead, current and former Starbreeze Studios employees opened up about the rough production process of the game. Some revealed that they had been subject to months of crunch development for a project that was essentially doomed to fail from the start, which certainly didn't bode well for the title ever making the jump onto PS4 and Xbox One.

All things considered, it must be mentioned again that no word has been delivered in regards to an Xbox One version of Overkill's The Walking Dead just yet, but given the circumstances, odds are it could be cancelled, too. And while the game's cancellation for consoles will likely frustrate some PS4 and Xbox One fans, perhaps this situation is for the best. At least those players who had been waiting for the console release wouldn't have the chance to be disappointed by what was potentially going to be a subpar product. In the end, the cancellation would afford them with the ability to take their money elsewhere and spend it on a higher quality game.

Overkill's The Walking Dead is available now on PC.
