It's fair to say that Hideo Kojima is one of the most influential video game developers of all time. Breaking onto the scene with 1987's Metal Gear, Kojima is responsible for one of the very first examples of a stealth game. In his later releases, Kojima would blend his deep passion for cinema with the video game medium, creating some of the most cutting-edge cinematics of the time in the Metal Gear Solid series. Kojima has just announced that he's bringing his expertise to the Xbox, in a project that's rumored to be named Overdose.

Announced during the Xbox and Bethesda showcase, Hideo Kojima is working on a brand new IP, exclusively for Xbox Game Studios. After Kojima's unfortunate split with Konami years ago, the visionary has been able to have total freedom over his own projects and ideas, with Death Stranding being the first title that exemplified this. According to a fairly reputable leaker, Kojima's next project, Overdose, will be a horror game.

Every Overdose Leak So Far

Kojima Overdose Leak

Freelance writer Tom Henderson has gained quite a name for himself over the last few years, and especially within the last 12 months. Claiming to have a variety of industry insiders as sources, Henderson has leaked a plethora of details about a slew of upcoming games. In particular, Henderson has revealed just about all of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's gameplay details before Infinity Ward can. The latest leak from Henderson dropped just a week or so ago, where some ominous gameplay footage was released.

Allegedly sent to the leaker via an unknown source, this gameplay footage showed a character walking down an eerie dark hallway, checking the corners with a flashlight. The camera remained behind the protagonist, from a third-person perspective, and the gameplay ended with a jump scare, followed by a title card that read "A Hideo Kojima Game... Overdose."

Originally, this is all that Henderson revealed, but since leaking the footage, he's written an article that's dished out a few more details. On top of mentioning that Kojima Productions asked him to remove the footage, Henderson also stated that the Overdose can be played in both third-person and first-person, and that the gameplay was being controlled via a mobile phone. This seems to suggest that Overdose will utilize the Cloud, and will allow players to stream the game and control it via their phones, which is an angle that Xbox has been attempting for some time now. Henderson also suggests that Margaret Qualley, who played Mama in Death Stranding, has a part in Overdose.

That's about everything fans know right now. It's not a lot to go on, but it might suggest that a full reveal is coming sooner rather than later. Kojima's appearance at the Xbox and Bethesda showcase was generally met with more disappointment than excitement, as the creator only announced that he was going to reveal and discuss a game soon, so it would make sense that the eventual reveal is for Overdose. In terms of reliability, Tom Henderson is a fairly reputable source, but fans should still take the information with a big pinch of salt, especially with the game presumably being in early development.

That being said, a third or first-person horror game from Kojima Productions is a fairly exciting concept. Though the demo was short, the infamous PT served as the perfect evidence that Kojima is more than capable of creating a terrifying horror experience, and with Kojima's games often having at least a few creepy moments, it's clear the industry icon is very passionate about the horror genre. Hopefully fans can find out more about Overdose soon.

Overdose is rumored to be in development.
