It has been over three years since the release of Outward. In that time, players have undergone glorious adventures, defeated many great creatures, and had two fantastic expansions to discover. With the release of Outward Definitive Edition, players old and new will set foot in that world again.

These players will discover a beautiful but hostile world and must equip themselves accordingly. The simplest, but most effective loadout for besting this world and its ferocious inhabitants, is to prepare for plenty of melee combat.

7 Tsar Tank Build

This build requires a full set of Tsar armor, including the Tsar shield. Players will need to enchant each armor piece with "aegis" and the shield with the "guided arm" enchantment.

In addition, players will want to obtain the Brass-Wolf Backpack, the "runic protection" skill, and the various elemental boon skills. With everything equipped and enchanted, users will have 25 in protection, 88% physical damage reduction, 61% impact resistance, and plenty of elemental resistances, making them almost unkillable.

6 The Stamina Build

For this build, players will want to specifically name their character "code sonic" during the character creation process. This will allow them to use a special rolling animation while sprinting that will allow them to move extraordinarily fast.

While this does still drain the same amount of stamina as sprinting, this can be countered. If players equip the Dancer Set and Zhorn's Hunting Backpack, their speed will increase as will their stamina efficiency. This combination will give players upwards of two-thirds stamina cost reduction for any action they take.

5 The Troglodyte Build

This build requires a tremendous amount of preparation. Players have to first unlock a legacy chest in a previous playthrough. Inside the chest, they will need to place a green mushroom. In a new game, players will need to select the name of the character who placed the mushroom in the chest as an ancestor. This will turn the character into a troglodyte.

People will then want to pick up the Steadfast Ascetic breakthrough skill from Galira in Monsoon. As well as the Shamanic Resonance breakthrough skill from Adalbert the Hermit. They will also need to get the Brawns passive skill from Justin Garnet, the Specialist Trainer in New Sirocco.

Players will also need to collect as many discipline potions as they can, as Trogs can’t use active human skills, only passives. If they are able to complete the Hallowed Peacemaker questline, they can also gain the Exalted buff. This buff would eventually kill its user but doubles all damage dealt.

With these passives and a Tsar spear equipped, players will deal 288 damage per hit, and for a brief period can become a Trog of Legends before ascending to the In-Between Realm when the Exalted buffs "life drain" takes effect.

4 Giant Dad Build

For this build, players will want to equip the White Kintsugi armor set and the Pillar Great hammer. The armor provides a physical resistance of 68%, impact resistance of 64%, and protection of 7. Players should enchant their armor and helmet with Aegis and their boots with Flux to enhance their movement speed and protection stats. They should also consider obtaining the Shamanic Resonance, Infuse Wind, Juggernaut, and Moon Swipe skills.

With the Rage boon equipped and using the Juggernaut or Moon swipe skill, it is possible to deal over 400 impact damage in a single attack, which would send most enemies flying.

3 Utility Belt Build

For this build, players will want to max out their pouch capacity as much as possible. The easiest way to do this is by equipping a Scaled Leather Chest piece with the beast of burden enchantment.

Then players will want to equip the helmet and boots from the Pilgrim Armor set. Players should also consider acquiring the Logistics Expert Skill as this will further increase their pouch capacity by 5. With all of these things, combined players will have a pouch capacity of 37 pounds.

2 “One Punch” Build

The one-punch build lets players one-shot most enemies easily. Players will need to equip the Tsar Fists (enchanted with whiplash) and a pistol loaded with Shatter Bullets they can quickly swap to.

The character will need to wear Zagis’ Armor and Helmet along with the Slayer's Boots. In addition, they will need to equip Brigand's Backpack and also have the Prismatic Flurry and amplified Discipline skills. Every elemental boon skill should also be available.

If the player can have all five elemental buffs applied at the same time, in addition to the Discipline boon and pain debuff, it is possible to deal well over 600 damage in a single blow. This is more than enough to one-shot the vast majority of standard enemies in the game.

1 Shield Hero Build

This build requires players to invest heavily in Shields and one-handed melee weapons. Players should acquire the Blue Sand set as it's very reliable and can be gained quite early in the campaign.

Finally, players should also max out the Spellblade skill tree in Cierzo, and obtain Infuse Wind ability from the Cabal shaman as it grants several helpful passive buffs and will allow the player to infuse their weapon with fire, cold, or wind as well as explode that element on their shield, or shoot the element as a magical projectile.

Outward Definitive Edition is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
