The new multi-platform release of Outriders from People Can Fly brings with it a slew of new mechanicsA key mechanic for Outriders is the Story Point system, which gives a heft of power to the players once it's fully understood.

The length of Outriders can shift drastically, depending on how users choose to tackle the content presented within. People Can Fly has been adamant about ensuring its title is released fully, without additional piece-mealed content being drip-fed to users over the following months. The content that is there, however, can actually be repeated quite simply.

The Story Point mechanic within Outriders exists as a timeline for players, that can freely jump backward and forwards through the campaign to retry past missions. Like Dr. Who with an arsenal of weaponry, the ability to jump backward in time sets all NPCs (and enemies) back to how they appeared within a certain story beat. Unlike the quintessential Doctor, however, branching timelines aren't an issue within the title.

Outriders presents a centralized storyline that does not branch from the primary path. The most player agency offered in terms of the narrative presented is whether or not characters opt to complete side-quests which can be found scattered across the land of Enoch. For some, this may be a negative aspect of the title, where multiple playthroughs don't offer unique situations for players to navigate. Instead, People Can Fly has centralized its efforts in ensuring that players can replay missions at a whim. This opens the door for unique situations for players to exploit, which was seen in the demo.

Within the Outriders demo, players found a mission called Terra Infirma which allowed a singular captain to be repeatedly farmed in the hope of dropping a legendary. By selecting the Story Point immediately after clearing the supply route for Shira Gutmann, the Grand Marshall of Rift Town, users could infinitely clear the mission Terra Infirma, and restart it in the hopes of dropping better loot. This is how Story Points are used within the entirety of the campaign, as well. Users can select any past missions, and leap back in time for additional loot.

Since loot becomes the basis of Outriders' economy with scraps and other sundries offered for dismantling or selling items, the Story Point system becomes a host of unlimited power in Outriders. Combining this feature with World Tiers in Outriders allows hardy gamers to increase the possibility of legendary item drops while farming one mission consistently.

The player can then enjoy the heft of drops and currencies accumulated from the farming, and jump back into the present Story Point to continue where users left off.

Outriders is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
