The Outlast Trials is a multiplayer survival horror game that brings new energy to the franchise. Players find themselves in an experimental torture facility owned by Murkoff Corporation to be Reborn again through trial-based therapy. Every trial requires players to complete an objective by doing tasks, solving puzzles, and finding essential items.

During these trials, players are subjected to violence at the hands of the area's monsters. Like in previous Outlast games, fighting isn't really an option, with evasion and hiding being the best way to avoid getting attacked. Players can also equip helpful equipment called Rigs that give them special abilities to their loadout before completing a trial. However, Rigs are only available once they do a few tasks, so this guide covers how to unlock Rigs in The Outlast Trials.

What Are Rigs

The Outlast Trials Rigs

Rigs are installable equipment that gives players a slight edge during trials. They can be equipped at the main terminal inside The Sleep Room at Murkoff's facility, where players stay between trials. There are four Rigs in The Outlast Trials:

  • Stun Rig: A projectile that releases an electric shock that temporarily stuns and disorients enemies.
  • Blind Rig: Drops a landmine that releases a temporary blinding smoke when triggered by enemies.
  • Heal Rig: A gas that emits a healing agent that restores health to players and nearby friends in co-op matches.
  • X-Ray Rig: Grants the ability to see through walls to spot enemies.

How To Unlock Rigs

The Outlast Trials The Engineer

Players can purchase Rigs from Cornelius Noakes, the Engineer in the facility, once they reach Therapy Level 2. Their Therapy Level increases as they earn XP during trials. Passing a trial rewards the highest amount of XP, but small amounts can be earned even when players fail. For example, completing The Outlast Trials' first trial, Kill the Snitch, will put players at Therapy Level 2.

The Engineer is down the hall to the left of the Murkoff Facility's main terminal inside the Bingo Fuel Garage. Players can follow the floor markings to find him. Rigs can be purchased using the ticket earned each time the Therapy Level increases. After buying a Rig, it will be available to use in trials in loadout. There are optional tutorial modules for each Rig outside the Bingo Fuel Garage.

The Outlast Trials

Rigs are consumables with limited use, but Rig Recharges are found around the map during trials inside lockboxes, cabinets, tool kits, and more. Rig Recharges work like Antidotes and Batteries; players can use them by accessing their inventory.

The Outlast Trials

Players who own multiple Rigs can only access one at a time during a trial but can swap them out back at the main terminal.

The Outlast Trials is available in Early Access on PC.
