The Outlast franchise has been one of the most frightening and popular horror series of the past decade. Between Outlast, its Whistleblower DLC, and Outlast 2, the horror franchise has left an indelible mark on gaming. Now that developer Red Barrels has defined its brand of horror, it's ready to start something experimental. The Outlast Trials, first teased in October 2019, adds a multiplayer element to the horror series that's going to terrify an entirely new way.

A brand new teaser trailer for The Outlast Trials was shared during Saturday's PC Gaming Show 2020 presentation. The trailer was cinematic in nature, but did hint at some of the gameplay Outlast fans can look forward to. It shows the premise of the game, which is that there is any number of victims from the in-game Outlast trials. These victims are being prepared for some kind of disturbing and deadly tests. Players will have to work together to overcome these challenges.

The brief segment of The Outlast Trials' trailer that hinted at gameplay featured a player running from a monstrous foe. The foe wields a giant hammer, while the player has nothing to defend themselves with. They come up to a tall obstacle, but have a friendly character offering a hand up. As they're being pulled up, the friend has a knife or arrow put through their neck. The player then finds themselves at the mercy of their hammered foe.

Gameplay in The Outlast Trials hasn't been revealed yet, but judging from the trailer players will be working together to survive from a variety of murderous enemies.  The new game profile for The Outlast Trials says that's cooperative multiplayer, so it's unclear if the enemies will be AI-controlled or not. All that's been said of the game is that players will "work alongside their friends in a world of distrust, fear, and violence."

Clearly, there's a lot left for Red Barrels to share about The Outlast Trials. Players can fill in some of the blanks, like how spooky, violent, and intense the game is inevitably going to be. But as for structure and gameplay, Red Barrels will have to explain as it's able.

For the time being, The Outlast Trials is confirmed just for PC and can be wishlisted now on both PC and the Epic Games Store. Hopefully, more information will be shared in the weeks and months to come.

The Outlast Trials releases in 2021 on PC.
