Shortly after being acquired by the then-named Microsoft Studios, Obsidian Entertainment revealed their new gameThe Outer Worlds, during The 2018 Game Awards this past December. Their new title resembles much of what the studio has done in the past, with their upcoming space exploration game showing many parallels to another of their most beloved releases, Fallout: New Vegas.

Even though the space adventure will see players make allegiances with specific groups of people, there's a possibility of never having to take an aggressive approach towards enemies at all. During Game Informer's monthly rapid-fire questionnaire, developers Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky briefly discussed the potential for a fully-pacifist playthrough of The Outer Worlds

While both Cain and Boyarsky wouldn't give a direct response, other developers on the team did confirm the game can be completed without having to kill anyone. It's rare for games to offer the option to play from start to finish in a fully passive state. Toby Fox's Undertale, which released on PC back in 2015, is one of the more recent games to launch offering this same type of passive approach.

If the option to not kill any enemies in The Outer Worlds is possible at launch, it comes as a feature rarely seen in most giant open-world games, especially one from the team behind one of the most well-known Fallout games to ever release. Speaking of FalloutThe Outer Worlds will be offering the same narrative decision-making feature players have come to expect from a series such as Fallout and even Mass Effect. Given there are seemingly multiple ways to progress through the story, the ability to complete a full-pacifist playthrough may be more difficult than simply refusing to pull the trigger on a whim.

Even if players aren't looking to play the 'nice guy' role, The Outer Worlds still offers tons of player agency when it comes to interacting with companions. While the ability to romance other characters won't be a feature being offered to players, companions will be able to come and go as they see fit at different times throughout the story.

The Outer Worlds is expected to launch sometime in 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
