Gamers looking to fill the Fallout sized hole in their hearts will likely enjoy exploring The Outer Worlds, Obsidian Entertainment’s latest sci-fi RPG. While it has a great deal in common with the company’s previous work, The Outer World manages to separate itself with refreshing takes on age-old genre conventions and a style and tone entirely its own.

One of the welcome examples of Obsidian's trademark humor in The Outer Worlds is the introduction of science weapons that, although lacking in damage output, are extremely fun to use and produce quirky effects on their victims. There are five science weapons scattered throughout the Halcyon Cluster, but this guide is on how to find the Mandibular Rearranger.

Step One: Weapons From the Void

After completing the main story quest A Stranger in a Strange Land, the protagonist will have access to the console in the Captain’s Quarters of the Unreliable. After pouring over the former captain’s messages, the protagonist will learn that prior to his fatal escape pod accident, Alex Hawthorne had been searching for the so-called Science weapons. This discovery will launch the Weapons From the Void side quest.

Step Two: The Groundbreaker

The first step to acquiring the Mandibular Rearranger is to travel to the Groundbreaker and speak with a black market fence by the name of Gladys. In addition to purchasing the quest data pad with the Prismatic Hammer location, the player can also purchase the Hephaestus Mining Archive Cartridge. After reviewing the archive cartridge on the Captain’s terminal aboard the Unreliable, the protagonist will discover that the Mandibular Rearranger was used to kill one of the miners at the outpost on Scylla and is likely still there.

Step Three: Scylla

Upon arriving at Scylla, the quest marker will lead the Captain of the Unreliable to a small building in the Abandoned Mining Outpost in the northeast corner of the map. The Mandibular Rearranger is in a blue and green case on the floor.

Note: The Hermit who can translate Vicar Max’s book also resides at this Abandoned Mining Outpost.

Mandibular Rearranger

The Mandibular Rearranger is a 1-handed melee weapon which, like the name suggests, rearranges the facial bones of any human target it strikes. Blows to any targets will slow them down and repeated hits can stop them entirely for a period of time depending on the player’s Science skill level.

With this bizarre baton in the bag, the Captain of the Unreliable can scour the Halcyon Cluster for the remaining four science weapons: the Shrink Ray, the Mind Control Ray, the Gloop Gun, and the Prismatic Hammer.

The Outer Worlds is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Switch version also in development.
