The Outer Worlds could not be releasing at a better time for developer Obsidian Entertainment and their publishing partner Private Division. The Fallout series is in a weird place following the release of Fallout 76 and fans of the series likely won't see a possible return to form for almost a half-decade.

In the meantime, it looks like The Outer Worlds could not only scratch that Fallout itch, but be the smaller-scope game that can fill in the Fallout void. Let's now look at 5 reasons why it will scratch that Fallout itch and 5 why The Outer Worlds won't.

10 Won't: Length

The Outer Worlds is a game very much inspired by Fallout and shares many similarities that fans will enjoy. In terms of differences, the biggest glaring one will be the length of the game. Fallout games are often lauded as role-playing games that offer hundreds of hours of gameplay content for fans to experience at their leisure. For The Outer Worlds, you're going to be looking at around 30 hours on average. That's still a solid gameplay experience and in 2019 that might be the perfect length for games like this.

9 Will: Memorable Characters

One glance at the reveal trailer for The Outer Worlds would have made you understand that the interesting and unique characters of the Fallout universe have made their way to space. Obsidian Entertainment looks like they're continuing to deliver characters that players not only love engaging in conversations with but can become lifelong favorites for fans. Fallout: 76 may not have had any human non-playable characters, but boy howdy will The Outer Worlds have plenty.

8 Won't: Not Bethesda

There's an ongoing debate as to whether Fallout 3 or Fallout: New Vegas is the best game in the series. One is made by Bethesda internally, while the latter was made by Obsidian Entertainment, the developers of The Outer Worlds. Depending on where you land in that discussion it could have an impact on how much you'll enjoy the game. Though they're eerily similar, both Bethesda and Obsidian do unique things that make their games feel like their own, and Bethesda had no involvement in this Fallout-like game.

7 Will: New Vegas Veterans

When you have a game being developed in the same genre as one of their previous titles then you'll likely see the same quality and polish put into it. The Outer Worlds was made by several people responsible for Fallout: New Vegas, which is considered by many to be the best game in the franchise. So, not only is The Outer Worlds meant to invoke a Fallout-like experience, it's developed by the people who brought together and delivered the best of that series in many ways.

6 Won't: Same, But Different

Fallout: New Vegas may have been developed by Obsidian Entertainment, but the development of the game was still overseen by Bethesda to some capacity. With the release of The Outer Worlds, there are no Bethesda fingerprints on it which will result in a slightly different game.

That doesn't mean that it will be better or worst than New Vegas, but rather that it will assuredly be different in some way. Don't expect it to be a copy of New Vegas with a space skin on top of it.

5 Will: Interesting World

When Fallout fans first realized that The Outer Worlds would ditch a post-apocalypse for a space adventure it left them a little cautious. Since then the numerous previews and teases have showcased an interesting world teeming with plenty of interesting landscapes and eccentric characters both friendly and dangerous. If the world ends up being as alive and captivating as it's looked then Obisidan Entertainment may be looking at the start of a new special franchise for themselves moving forward.

4 Won't: No Apocalypse

If you're the type of person who loves Fallout because of the setting then The Outer Worlds will not scratch that same itch. The game trades in a world in the post-apocalypse for a science fiction adventure among the stars. That doesn't mean you won't be encountering weird and dangerous creatures alongside some nefarious circumstances, you just likely won't have to deal with radiation or zombie-like enemies. With it releasing on Xbox Game Pass it'll be worth trying no matter what your preferences are.

3 Will: Side Quests

The Fallout franchise has never been revered because of its main story because the core of what makes the series great is the atmosphere, writing, and characters. A lot of times the best and most memorable experiences happen during side quests that have the player doing something that is often inconsequential.

The Outer Worlds looks to feature plenty of missions that take players off the beaten path and it seems that there may be some handy rewards for going out of your way to do them.

2 Won't: Scope

The truth of the matter is that The Outer Worlds doesn't have the size, scope, and depth of a Fallout game. This is due to several factors including budget, schedule, and vision of the project for the developers. That being said, it seems that the game will take around 30 hours on average to complete which means it still offers a sizeable experience. If you're the type of Fallout fan who loves to spend hundreds of hours in the world, then maybe look at what replaying the campaign could provide you in terms of replayability.

1 Will: The Humor

During the reveal trailer for The Outer Worlds, there's a part where the humor shines and viewers get a glimpse at the types of jokes and bits that you can look forward to in the game's full release. The recent release of Borderlands 3 was a glaring example of how humor can make or break a game for lifelong fans and incoming first-time players of a series. If Obsidian is to be trusted then The Outer Worlds will showcase the best of what makes the humor in Fallout memorable and worthwhile.
