Outer Wilds received exciting updates today during today's Annapurna Interactive Showcase. During the forty or so minute event, the publisher showed off new gameplay for the PlayStation exclusive Stray, an update to Solar Ash, and more. But perhaps the highlight of the showcase was information on the space exploration adventure game, which included an all-new reveal trailer for a fresh DLC expansion from developer Mobius Digital.

Outer Wilds, which can often be confused with The Outer Worlds, was released in 2019 as one of the most well-received games of the year. Since then, it has gained a cult-like following thanks to its unique gameplay design, music, eerie story, and more. The game has picked up awards since its launch, including the BAFTA for best game of 2019, and now it is set to expand. In the game itself, players embark on a journey to explore space in ways that few games have allowed, and now the Echoes of the Eye DLC will give even more opportunities to do so.

The Echoes of the Eye trailer starts out feeling very much like the original Outer Wilds, including the relaxing tunes of the Outer Wilds banjo theme. But things quickly get eerie and disturbing, which is also what happens with the full game. The footage shows new areas, fresh puzzles, and even an entirely new sounding piece of music once the DLC's name is revealed towards the end of the video. The DLC will drop in just two months on September 28.

Creative Director Alex Beachum introduced the trailer and provided an update during the Annapurna Interactive Showcase. Beachum noted that the expansion will "weave directly into the existing world and narrative." Fans of Outer Wilds may wonder how that is possible, as it would seem difficult to realistically fit something like that within an already stellar open-world experience. Beachum even rhetorically questioned it himself, saying that some could wonder how and also why the DLC exists, but then he simply showed off the mysterious and captivating footage. According to Beachum, Echoes of the Eye will be the only expansion for Outer Wilds.

Mobius Digital also gave a quick update on the Nintendo Switch version of Outer Wilds. The game is still very much in the works and the plan is for players to enjoy the game on the hybrid console this holiday season. Mobius Digital did not mention whether the Switch version would come with the new DLC or not, but if the game were to release after the release of Echoes of the Eye, it would be a safe assumption to consider it at least a possibility.

Outer Wilds is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and is coming to the Switch Holiday 2021. The Echoes of the Eye expansion will release on September 28.
