After a four-month wait, Netflix has officially announced that its original series, Outer Banks, will return for a third season.

Outer Banks premiered on Netflix in April of 2020 and became one of the platform's most popular series, earning a People's Choice Award for the Most Bingeworthy Show of 2020. Due to its success amidst a global pandemic, Netflix renewed the series for the second season in 2020.

The announcement for the third season of Outer Banks comes over four months after its second season was released on Netflix. No further information regarding an anticipated release date or additional casting has been made. Outer Banks stars Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Rudy Pankow, Carlicia Grant, Drew Starkey, Austin North, Charles Esten, and Cullen Moss are all be expected to reprise their roles in its upcoming third season.

Season 2 changed the landscape of Outer Banks, changing its lead from John B (Stokes) to Pope (Daviss). If season 3 follows this formula, it is likely that Kiara (Bailey) will be the new focus. Her character began to experience incredibly rocky circumstances with her family. Now that the group of teens is missing and stranded on an island, the background for Kiara's character may become more important to explore than ever before. Should Outer Banks be renewed for season 4, it will likely continue to revolve through the Pogues, allowing JJ Maybank to become the season's lead.

Following the success of Outer Banks on Netflix, many of the show's stars have gone on to land some huge roles. Bailey appeared as one of the leads in an episode of Ryan Murphy's American Horror Stories, while Stokes appeared in the Amazon series Tell Me Your Secrets. Cline joined the stellar cast of Knives Out 2, teaming up with Daniel Craig, Kathryn Hahn, Janelle Monáe, Dave Bautista, Leslie Odom Jr., and many others. Starkey has also been announced as a member of the cast for the upcoming Hellraiser reboot.

To get to the bottom of some of Outer Banks' newest mysteries, fans of the Netflix series may have to wait longer than they hope to. Outer Banks' second season began shooting in late 2020 and concluded three months before its July 2021 release. By this timeline, the next season of Outer Banks may not appear on Netflix until late 2022 or early 2023. Until then, fans can piece together clues from its previous seasons, watch the cast's new projects, and prepare themselves for what will surely be an emotional season 3.
