What they have in common, though, is that they have all been nominated for more than one Academy Award, and all have received mostly positive reviews from both the critics and the audience on Rotten Tomatoes. Considering their high quality, it will be difficult to guess which of the nominated movies will win an Oscar for the best picture.

10 Don't Look Up: 56 %

Don't-Look-Up-2

Of all the movies nominated for the best picture, Don't Look Up has the lowest rating with the critics and did much better with the audience, who gave it the rating of 78 percent. Regardless of whether the movie wins the award or not, Don't Look Up is a clever satire that shows how humanity might act if they faced a crisis threatening to extinct all life.

Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio give excellent performances as two astronomers who warn the world about an incoming comet, but nobody believes them. Meryl Streep then gives yet another unforgettable performance as the President of the United States. The movie was nominated for four Academy Awards, so it's not without a chance.

9 Nightmare Alley: 79 %

Bradley Cooper in dim lighting in Nightmare Alley

Despite its name, Nightmare Alley isn't a horror movie, but a crime thriller instead. The story is complex as it focuses on two morally ambiguous people portrayed by Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett.

The complicated relationship between them is one of the highlights of the movie. It creates a strong story overall and keeps the audience guessing as to what will happen next. Guillermo del Toro has directed many high-quality movies, and Nightmare Alley, with its four Oscar nominations fits among the very best.

8 Dune: 83 %

Timothee Chalamet holding a blade in Dune

Science fiction films don't often win Best Picture, but Dune could do very well in other categories, as it's been nominated for no less than Oscars. The story is the ultimate space opera that creates a brand-new world filled with fleshed-out characters, fascinating the audience and drawing them in.

Timothée Chalamet gives a strong performance in the leading role, but the movie has a talented cast overall. Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Zendaya, and many others all make the movie memorable.

7 Belfast: 87 %

Belfast 2021

Director Kenneth Branagh is best known for his adaptations of William Shakespeare's plays. However, his black-and-white drama movie Belfast can be considered Branagh's most personal movie to this date. As its name suggests, it takes place in Belfast. It's set in the late 1960's, the time when Branagh lived in Belfast as a young boy, and the movie reflects the time of his childhood.

6 King Richard: 90 %

King Richard 2021

Movies inspired by real events and people often do well at the Oscars. King Richard, which scored six nominations in total, focuses on how Richard Williams trained his young daughters Venus and Serena, who went on to become two of the most successful tennis players of all time.

The movie is compelling and touching, and the cast is excellent. Will Smith mostly steals the show for himself, as his Oscar nomination for Best Actor suggests, but everybody involved gives a strong performance. King Richard is an interesting watch even for those who don't like tennis, as it's just as much about a family as it is about the sport.

4 West Side Story: 92 %

3 The Power Of The Dog: 94 %

The Power of the Dog

With her nomination as the best director, Jane Campion broke a record as the only female director nominated twice for the Best Director Oscar. The western drama The Power of the Dog scored twelve nominations in total. It focuses on the complicated relationships in one family ruled by the cold Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch).

The movie doesn't spare its heroes, and it's a delight to watch thanks to the talented cast. In addition to Cumberbatch, the movie also stars Kirsten Dunst, Thomasin McKenzie, Frances Conroy, and other talented performers.

2 CODA: 96 %

Coda 2021

The main heroine of this movie, Ruby, is the only member of her immediate family who can hear, and her parents rely on her. But when she discovers how much she enjoys singing and that she's good at it, Ruby will have to make a decision about what's more important for her.

CODA is a realistic, civil, and sensitive piece about a family who loves each other, yet faces an unexpected challenge. The characters are sympathetic, and despite the dilemma that Ruby is facing, CODA ultimately comes across as a feel-good movie. In addition to the nomination for Best Picture, it also got two more Oscar nominations, for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor.

1 Drive My Car: 98 %

Drive My Car 2021

Drive My Car has a unique position in this year's Oscars. Most of the pictures nominated are American, but this drama movie is Japanese. It's also longer than most of the nominees, running for almost three hours. Despite its length, the story about the famous theater director and his new driver who find an unexpected understanding in each other has what it takes to captivate the audience.

The actors in the leading roles, Hidetoshi Nishijima and Toko Miura, are excellent. The relationship between them evolves in an organic way, and some plot twists will surprise viewers.
