As excited as everyone was to see Oscar Isaac take on Moon Knight, many forget this wasn't his first role in the superhero film genre. Because it's been six whole years since it arrived in theaters, Marvel fans forget that Isaac played iconic X-Men villain Apocalypse in X-Men: Apocalypse.

X-Men: Apocalypse received mixed reviews from critics when it was released, although what stood out from the film in a bad way had little to do with Isaac's performance. Recently, Isaac reflected on what it was like back then playing Apocalypse in the X-Men film.

In a recent interview with the New York Times, Isaac said he was excited to work with some of the well-known actors in the cast, and he enjoyed his time being involved with the film. However, he acknowledged that the film didn't turn out quite as well as he would have liked, which he attributes to how the film handled the character of Apocalypse. "I know exactly what I went in there wanting to do and the reasons why," Isaac said. "There were these amazing actors involved that I really wanted to work with, [James] McAvoy and [Michael] Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence. I collected X-Men growing up, and I loved Apocalypse, I just found him such a freaky, weird character... I still think back to that time with fondness. I wish it would have been a better film and that they would have taken care of the character a little better, but those are the risks."

X-Men Apocalypse

X-Men: Apocalypse largely suffered from way too many characters, too many plotlines, and too little development of either, which to some degree affected Isaac's portrayal of Apocalypse. What really went against the film going in was that its predecessor X-Men: Days of Future Past had already revealed that everything was fine in the future. So, it was odd that the franchise decided to do another time period superhero film when everyone already knew our heroes would be fine.

Regardless of how the film turned out, Isaac can take comfort in knowing that his current series Moon Knight is getting much better reviews primarily because of his performance as the titular character. Even better, he will be playing Spider-Man 2099 in the upcoming Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the sequel to the universally acclaimed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. And who knows, maybe he'll get the chance to play Apocalypse again now that the X-Men are slated to be involved in the MCU. Andrew Garfield got his second chance in Spider-Man: No Way Home and ran with it. Isaac could definitely do the same.

Even though it's happened before, not a lot of actors acknowledge the mistakes of the previous films they chose to be in. In fact, these days, it seems more actors double down on why the bad movies they were in were good (when many say otherwise). Props to Isaac for being brutally honest about the situation when no one would have blamed him if he wasn't.

X-Men: Apocalypse can currently be watched on Disney Plus.
