Oscar Isaac is one of those actors who can choose just about any role he wants these days. That's why his decision to take on the role of Solid Snake in the upcoming Metal Gear Solid movie isn't about necessity as it is about him wanting to take on a character he's had an affinity for over quite some time. The star of the also upcoming Moon Knight Disney Plus show recently explained why he loves Solid Snake so much.

Considering Isaac's film resume, it might surprise some people to know that he's taking on a video game movie in Metal Gear Solid. However, over the course of his career, the actor has shown that he is willing to do work in all kinds of different genres. In a recent interview, the actor talked about why, exactly, this earned the right to call itself his first foray into this particular category of film.

In a recent interview with Total Film, Isaac explained that he's always loved the game. In particular, he loved the feeling that the game gave him whenever he played it. He added that it's one of those games that gives a different feeling from one moment to the next. At one point it's a mournful, lonely game to play, and then there are explosions of violence. He also likes the villains that have been part of the Metal Gear Solid universe over the years. Isaac feels the combination of the gameplay feeling mixed with the weird villains made the game feel as though it was kind of a military, psychedelic horror story. However, that doesn't really encompass the story.

The Moon Knight star also said he always like what was buried underneath. He believes that when people really peel back the layers, what they find is an anti-war tale. The script for the Metal Gear Solid film is being penned by Derek Connolly for Jordan Vogt-Roberts to direct. Avi Arad is producing while Peter Kang will oversee the project for Sony.

The former Star Wars hero has plenty of experience working in stories that depict the ravages of war, but they are really anti-war stories. Now that it appears he's stepping away from the battle between the rebels and the empire, he's got some room to move in other franchises. That includes video game movies with what he hopes are rather complex stories.

That's one of the other reasons Isaac wanted to take on the role of Solid Snake. He wanted to see if the story of Metal Gear Solid could be told on film. For now, he still hasn't had that question answered, but the movie is officially a go, so his fans should find out soon enough.

Metal Gear Solid does not have a release date yet.
