Just over a week ago, fans were sad to hear that long-time Sonic the Hedgehog voice actor Roger Craig Smith was relinquishing his role as the blue blur, a character he has been a huge part of for ten years. Not long after the announcement, Smith took to Twitter to thank fans for their kind words. Not surprisingly, there's been quite a bit of talk about who will get to be the new voice of Sonic, and it looks as though someone has already thrown their hat into the ring.

In a recent livestream, Ryan Drummond said his agent had reached out to Sega in the hope of getting a dialogue going between the two. Long-time fans of Sonic the Hedgehog will no doubt recognize the name. Drummond has been the voice behind the titular character for such games as Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, and is also credited for Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut and Sonic Advance 3 for the Gameboy Advance.

During the stream, Drummond said that he didn't want to get fans' hopes up by saying that he would definitely be reprising his role, but it does seem like he is keen to make a return. However, he added that there are a number of factors to consider before any concrete decision can be made. This isn't the first time fans have been hoping for the return of Sonic voice actors. Just a couple of days ago, it was announced that Colleen O'Shaughnessey would not be returning to her role as Tails.

Starting his career as a bass vocalist, Drummond was offered the role of Sonic the Hedgehog back in 1998 going right through to 2004 when Jason Griffith took over for the anime series, Sonic X. While Drummond still does the occasional video game voice acting, his main focus seems to be theater. Hopefully, this latest news will signify a triumphant return to one of his most iconic character.

“I wish I could [say ‘yes’], but we don’t know anything yet. You know as much as I know… We don’t want to get kinda bogged down with this conversation topic, but I don’t have any trouble... in telling everyone… my agent did contact SEGA today, so hopefully there’ll be a conversation. And we'll see what happens after that. There's a lot of different factors that people don't even realise that are in play here."

Currently, all fans can do is keep an eye out for further developments on who will be the new (or old) voice of Sonic the Hedgehog. The franchise is still going strong after all, what with LEGO teaming up with Sega to create a set based on the Green Hill Zone, and the new animated Netflix series being announced, so news about who will get to voice the classic blue character will be imminent. Of course, many long time fans will likely be holding out for Drummond.
