Next month gamers will be able to take control of Sonic and Tails from two different eras in Sonic Generations. The game is being marketed as a trip down memory lane with fans taking the role of Dreamcast and Genesis era Sonics. Players will also be able to play the original Sonic the Hedgehog, which will come as an unlockable title in the game.

Sonic games have become rather disappointing over the past decade. Sonic took on many forms, including a werewolf, which didn't work out so well and fans were starving to get back to the fast-paced fun they remembered from the Genesis days. Sega finally got their act together and returned to roots with Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (see our Sonic 4 review), and many are hoping Sonic Team can repeat their success with Sonic Generations.

The inclusion of the game that started it all is a nice bonus to those who pick up Generations. The original was fun, but the game got a lot better when Sonic gained his patented Spin Attack in Sonic 2. The inclusion of this classic title could also indicate that the original Dreamcast title, Sonic Adventure might also make its way onto the disk.

Seeing as though Sonic Generations is paying homage to two different eras of Sonic, it will only be fitting to include both flagship titles. This may be asking a bit much from Sega, though fans definitely won't mind getting two free games in one package. They could have at least included it in the Sonic Generations Collectors Edition.

With this holiday season already crowded with games like Uncharted 3, Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 — that is a lot of threes — perhaps Sega should have included Sonic Adventure so they don't get completely stomped by the competition.

Will the inclusion of Sonic the Hedgehog persuade you to grab Sonic Generations when it comes out?

Sonic Generations will launch on November 1st for PS3 and Xbox 360, with a 3DS launch pending.
