A Doom fan has managed to get the original 1993 game to run in Unity Engine, showing just how versatile the iconic FPS is. That's not to say it's been rebuilt or programmed in the software. It's more that it's been ported to a particular function within the Unity editor itself. It's no secret that id Software's release is a game that's been ported to multiple systems over the decades. From MS-DOS and early Windows, right through to the Xbox One and Switch, it seems there's no end of machines that can run the shooter.

However, those are official ports, and over the course of nearly three decades, fans have also managed to get the game to play on some unusual devices, including someone who got a version of Doom to run on a portable medical ultrasound scanner. There have been instances of the game being ported to a John Deere tractor, smartwatches, pregnancy tests, and even inside Minecraft. As such, some have challenged themselves to see exactly how bizarre Doom ports can get.

Reddit user xabblll is one of the latest fans to prove the versatility of the influential shooter by actually making Doom run inside the Unity editor. A brief clip shows them accessing the Inspector function of the software and going to "Add Component." They then boot the game up without having to alt-tab or exit out of Unity. It even comes complete with sound. The user has also posted a link to GitHub for anyone who wants to install the game for themselves. In the post, xabblll says+ they went ahead with this port simply because "no one did it," but also because they wanted to learn how to execute "complex stuff" within Inspector.

Unity is one of the most popular game engines in the world, second only perhaps to Unreal. There are many AAA and indie titles that have been built in Unity, including Cuphead, Pokemon GO, Among Us, Roblox, and the survival games Rust and Subnautica. While it's not a free development toolkit, there is a free version of it, which probably accounts for some of its popularity.

As for Doom itself, it's generally considered to be one of the most influential video games in history, especially in the FPS genre. Not only was it innovative at the time, but it was also a pioneer in early online multiplayer gaming. The title is obviously dated as the years have gone by, but there's no denying the impact it had on the industry and the waves it still makes even now.

Doom was released in 1993 and is available on multiple platforms.
