The tower defense genre is a touchy subject. On the one hand, there are probably upwards of 3,000 tower defense flash, iOS, PSP and even console games. On the other hand, as we've seen with a recent zombie trailer, there's always room for innovation and re-imagining.
Robot Entertainment may not be a name that rings any bells for most gamers, but a majority of this team apparently comes from the now defunct Ensemble Studios. Ensemble were the guys and gals behind Halo Wars, and Robot Entertainment handled the servers for a short period after Microsoft shut down Ensemble.
Orcs Must Die! is their first full PC and console title, and it looks to be a strong start for the relatively new company. OMD! takes the typical tower defense game and personalizes it, giving the player control over an individual soldier who must run around the castle and take down all the invading orcs before they seize control. He does so with weapons, spells, and most excitingly, traps. The traps are obviously the crux of this game, and if they're as fun to set up as they are to watch, this could be one addicting title.
According to the game's website, The Mob is a group of ogres and orcs who are trying to break through some kind of magical rifts that will teleport them to the land of innocent villagers and peasants. The Order, a group of War Mages, have built castles throughout the orc homeland to defend against the Mob because "there are a lot of them, and they’re really, really angry." Your job is to keep them from the magical rifts using any means necessary.

Orcs Must Die! will be released for the PC and consoles at some point in the future.
