By now, most gamers on the internet have probably heard about how Capcom was hit by a ransomware attack that saw a massive amount of data being stolen and leaked. While this is really bad news for Capcom, fans of the company might disagree, because if the stuff that’s made its way online is at all legit, then it means they may eventually see the return of the long-dormant Onimusha series.

In the weeks following the ransomware attack that took place November 2, the sheer extent of the fallout is starting to come into focus, as loads of internal documents have allegedly detailed the company’s current game projects. According to the latest information, these documents have leaked Capcom’s game release plans for the next four years, listing off several unannounced titles for major franchises like Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Street Fighter, Mega Man, and more.

But amid all of these was something that suggests Capcom is also reviving Onimusha. The list of leaked projects includes mention of a “New Work” in the supernatural samurai action series that’s supposedly slated to come out in the fourth quarter of the 2022 fiscal year, which would put its release somewhere between January 1 and March 31, 2022. Beyond that, however, there is no other information to go off of as of this writing, including what the game could be and what platforms it’s being developed for.

Being that the series hasn’t seen a proper new entry since 2006, it’s safe to say a new game is long overdue, but there have been doubts one would ever be made. A few months ago, industry insiders claimed that Capcom was likely shelving plans to revive Onimusha due to poor sales of the 2019 remaster of the first game, which was apparently meant to gauge interest in the series these days.

While it looks Capcom may have changed its mind, it’s worth noting that the leaked documents might not be fully indicative of the company’s plans in the coming years. Assuming the information is accurate (and it’s worth reminding that it might not be), it’s not yet clear if Capcom intends to adjust its release schedule at all in response. Even if it doesn’t, there’s always the likelihood that the new game could be delayed to a later time because of development reasons.

At any rate, the possibility of Onimusha making a comeback will be welcomed by a lot of people. Onimusha has long ranked among the Capcom franchises fans want to see revived the most, so if there’s any bright side to the ransomware attack and its fallout, it’s that fans don’t have to give up hope for a new game just yet.

A new Onimusha project is allegedly in development for a 2022 release.
