With sales worldwide of over 30 million copies, and two anime seasons already produced, the hugely popular One Punch Man is ready to take on a new challenge. While fans are still digesting the second season of the anime and the recently released fighter, One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows, the next frontier is live-action.
One Punch Man was a surprise hit when the manga first debuted in 2009, growing virally online, before gaining an international following as the manga and anime reached new audiences in 2015. Main character Saitama's unique overpowered ability to down his opponents with only one punch make this story a quirky take on the superhero genre. While the most recent anime season was a mixed bag, that hasn't deterred Sony, who will be taking the franchise into the world of live-action film.
Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinker whose writing credits include Venom and the two recent Jumanji films will pen the script for the live-action One Punch Man movie. It is reported that Sony is excited to be working on the franchise, drawn in by the series huge worldwide popularity. No release details, casting choices, or a director are known at this time, but fans have several outlets to get their OPM fix in the meantime.
Bandai Namco is supporting the recently released One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows with some fun characters for DLC. Suiryu marks the first character in the DLC roster schedule to roll out over the coming months. So a steady drip of One Punch Man content will flow for the foreseeable future.
While live-action adaptations of anime can be tricky, the transition from 2D to 3D can go well, so fans will have their fingers crossed this one turns out right.
