Yamato is a beloved character introduced in One Piece's Wano Country arc. Known to be Kaido's son, he is an exceptionally powerful figure who had great significance to the plot in the Wano arc. He was introduced to the fans during the Raid on Onigashima when Luffy was fighting Ulti. Just when the fight was getting intense, Yamato rescued Luffy from the grasp of the Tobi Roppo and proceeded to introduce himself to the fans. Immediately, a connection to Kozuki Oden was made and shortly after, the character himself confirmed that he believed himself to be Oden. While he is indeed the son of Kaido, the abuse that he suffered from a very young age meant that he was already against Kaido. Furthermore, being inspired by Kozuki Oden meant that Yamato was always on the side of the rightful monarch of Wano. Growing up Yamato grew extremely rebellious and after meeting Ace, Luffy's brother, waited for the arrival of the Straw Hat pirate in anticipation. Upon joining the alliance during the Onigashima Raid, Yamato proved to be extremely helpful and thanks to his efforts, the war was won. At the center of all his powers is his incredible Devil Fruit, known as the Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Okuchi no Makami.

What Is The Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Okuchi no Makami?

Yamato fully transformed into a wolf

The very first glimpse of Yamato's Devil Fruit power, the Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Okuchi no Makami, came when he was defending Momonosuke and Shinobu from the Armored Division of the Beast Pirates, led by one of the Tobi Roppo, Sasaki. While Yamato didn't take Sasaki head-on, he certainly displayed his endurance during the short-lived clash. By defending both Momonosuke and Shinobu, he showed the fans he was quite powerful indeed. What was surprising, however, was that Yamato didn't seem to take much damage at all despite being showered in canon fire. Furthermore, as the clash prolonged, Yamato started developing razor-sharp teeth, which is a sign of a Zoan-type Devil Fruit. Sadly, due to Franky's interference, fans did not get the chance to witness his Devil Fruit power in its full glory. Shortly afterwards, Yamato went on to take Kaido on in a one-on-one duel as Luffy fell from Onigashima following his second defeat to the Yonko.

To hold Kaido at bay and keep him from killing all the raiders on the island, Yamato went all out and finally displayed his true strength. This is where fans got a proper debut of the Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Okuchi no Makami. The fruit was revealed to be a Mythical Zoan that Kaido acquired somehow a long time ago. It is unknown why Kaido acquired this Devil Fruit in the first place as every single member in his crew already had a Devil Fruit power, however, in a fit of hunger, Yamato decided to devour the fruit. Being a Mythical Zoan, Yamato's fruit is one of the very strongest to appear in One Piece.

It allows him to transform himself into a wolf deity known as Okuchi no Makami and, just like all the Zoan Devil Fruits, grants tremendous physical strength. The power of a wolf deity is certainly rare and that's exactly what makes it special as it is. The Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Okuchi no Makami, when paired together with incredibly powerful Haki and a resilient body with a Yonko's blood, makes Yamato one of the very few characters alive in the story strong enough to take on an Emperor in a one-on-one battle. Mythical Zoan Devil Fruits are the rarest known Devil Fruit class in One Piece. As such, some of the most special fruits belong in this category and they grant powers that are far superior to the other classes. While some of them are certainly not that special, such as Orochi's Hebi Hebi no Mi, Model: Yamata no Orochi, or Katarina Devon's Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Kyuubi no Kitsune, the majority of them are quite incredible. Furthermore, Mythical Zoan Devil Fruits grant their users a special ability that often resembles either a Paramecia or a Logia-type power. For instance, Marco's Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Phoenix, allows him to use the blue flames of resurrection and heal from any injuries. Similarly, Sengoku's Mythical Zoan gives him the ability to produce shockwaves, which can be categorized as a Paramecia ability.

Yamato's Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Okuchi no Makami also grants him a special power and that is the ability to use the element of ice. While fighting Kaido, Yamato made use of several ice-based attacks. He was able to counter Kaido's Borobreath with Namuji Hyōga, a blast of ice and cold that he shot from his mouth. His Devil Fruit also grants him the power to use ice as a defensive measure, as seen with the usage of Kagamiyama, which allowed him to coat his body in a sheet of ice and defend against Thunder Bagua. The power of Yamato's Devil Fruit is such that Kaido regarded it to be a fruit worthy of the Shogun of Wano.

In fact, Kaido said this Devil Fruit belongs to the guardian deity of the land which just goes to show that its powers are terrific indeed. Using the Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Okuchi no Makami, Yamato was able to hold off Kaido in a duel for an extended period of time. Not only was he able to defend against some of his most ferocious attacks, but he was also able to inflict injuries on him and draw blood from the Yonko. While it certainly isn't the strongest Devil Fruit in the series, the Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Okuchi no Makami is an incredible ability that is up there with the best. Yamato's short clash against Kaido certainly kept the fans from seeing the full extent of its capabilities. Provided that he joins the Straw Hat Pirates at a later point in the story, fans will get plenty of opportunities to witness what this mighty Devil Fruit can do.
