Dr. Vegapunk has been the main highlight of the Egghead Island arc. Oda kept him hidden for the majority of the series, so it makes sense to put Vegapunk in the limelight in the new arc. In the early chapters of the Egghead Island arc, the onus was on Vegapunk's satellites. It wasn't until One Piece Chapter 1066, that fans finally saw the actual body of Dr. Vegapunk.

As expected, Vegapunk is an old man, with a great deal of knowledge, and a unique design. It is evident from his looks that Vegapunk is heavily inspired by Albert Einstein. Vegapunk even imitated the iconic pose where Einstein had his tongue out. Vegapunk's hair is also frizzy, which is another thing that he has in common with the scientist. The top of Vegapunk's head resembles an apple, which could be inspired by the story of Isaac Newton, and the apple falling on his head, leading to the discovery of gravity.

The Reason Behind The Big Brain

Monkey D Dragon and Vegapunk

The thing that stood out most about Vegapunk's design was his big head. In the flashback, Vegapunk's brain was massive, and it was almost the size of his original body. No normal human could have such a large head unless they had gained some kind of power after eating a devil fruit.

It did not cross the mind of the readers that Vegapunk could have actually eaten a devil fruit after all, Oda has a tendency to create peculiar designs that have nothing to do with devil fruits. In One Piece Chapter 1067, it was confirmed that he is a devil fruit user after all.

The Nomi Nomi no Mi

Dr Vegapunk Nomi Nomi no Mi

The name of Vegapunk's devil fruit is Nomi Nomi no Mi, and it is a paramecia type devil fruit. It allows him to memorize all the information that he comes across, and depending on the amount that he learns, his brain grows in size accordingly. As stated by Vegapunk, the devil fruit is perfect for him as it allows him to store an unlimited amount of data.

The only problem that he could have faced is the size of his brain affecting his other activities. Over time, as Vegapunk's brain grew in size, and he realized that it might hinder his other activities, so he had to come up with a solution to tackle this issue. He tried to resolve this problem by cutting off his brain and storing it inside a place called, Punk Records, which came in handy when he created the six satellites. This allowed him to gain experience at a quicker pace, thus improving his knowledge expeditiously. To synchronize the information from the six satellites, it is necessary that they go to Punk Records. According to Vegapunk, this method could probably be used to share his knowledge with the rest of the world, which is similar to going to a library or surfing the internet.

Why Is He A Target For The World Government?

One Piece Rob Lucci Now A Part of CP-0

Vegapunk is undoubtedly the smartest character in One Piece. The plethora of knowledge that he possesses makes him a big threat to the World Government. The organization has already assigned Rob Lucci and his team to go to Egghead Island and get rid of all the bodies of Vegapunk. It is definitely suspicious considering the scientist has been serving them for years by making new inventions for them. So, what could possibly have happened that forced the World Government to get him assassinated?

The most reasonable explanation is that they believe Vegapunk has served his purpose. He has already created the Seraphims to replace the Shichibukai, and they are far stronger than ordinary pirates. The Seraphim can even push a Yonko on the backfoot, so, the World Government doesn't need Vegapunk to create anything new for them. It has already been revealed that the twenty kingdoms that ultimately formed the World Government feared the ancient kingdom because of its scientific advancements. Vegapunk has tried his best to imitate the ancient civilization, which is why Imu possibly wants him gone so as to avoid a repetition of the events that led to the Void Century.

What Is Vegapunk's Goal?

Vegapunk and Dragon at Ohara

In chapter 1066, it was confirmed that Vegapunk has ties with Monkey D. Dragon, who is considered to be the "Worst Criminal in the World." If the World Government managed to find out the connection between the two, they would definitely want to eliminate Vegapunk. However, Vegapunk, being the genius that he is, has already figured out that his life is in danger, and he has already spoken to Dragon about his potential death, and it is plausible to assume that he has shared some sensitive information with the leader of the Revolutionary Army.

Vegapunk and Dragon share a common goal, which is to get rid of the World Government. Clearly, Vegapunk cannot afford to fall before his dream is realized. So, in chapter 1067, Vegapunk openly asked Luffy to help him escape from Egghead Island, and fans know that Luffy isn't the type of person who would turn down a plea for help. However, he will want Vegapunk to set things right with Bonney before making a decision. Both Vegapunk and Luffy will have to hurry, as CP0 has already reached Egghead Island. Judging by Shaka's reaction, a big battle between the two groups seems very likely, and the Straw Hats will have no choice but to fight the assassins, as they are also on the radar of the World Government.
