Luffy is the protagonist of Eiichiro Oda's One Piece and one of the most powerful pirates of the seas right now. With the power of the Gomu Gomu no Mi, Luffy has become one of the most notorious figures in the story, having recently been promoted to the position of a Yonko, one of the four most influential pirates to live.

His Devil Fruit has been one of the key factors that led to him rising to this position and, over the years, he has proven that he is indeed one of the most creative devil fruit users to appear in the One Piece.

7 Made A Useless Ability Powerful

Luffy's Devil Fruit has always been quite difficult for him to master. Ever since he ate the fruit, it was looked upon as more of a disadvantage than an advantage. While training with his brothers, Ace and Sabo, the two often mentioned how Luffy's Devil Fruit causes him all sorts of problems and that it wasn't worth having a power like rubber.

Despite that, years of training led him to master this ability in a way that made him one of the strongest people in the world of One Piece. Luffy is exceptionally good at using his Devil Fruit and all this is down to his creativity. The Gomu Gomu no Mi, or the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, is just as good as its user.

6 Rokushiki

Luffy has always been incredibly creative with his Devil Fruit powers and this was apparent as early as the Enies Lobby arc of One Piece. After losing to the likes of Rob Lucci and witnessing his Rokushiki powers, Luffy came up with the idea of copying the abilities that he saw his enemy use.

Over the years, he has incorporated several Rokushiki techniques into his own arsenal. For instance, Luffy can mimic their high-speed movement called Soru by pumping blood faster in his body. He can fuse Haki with his Devil Fruit power to access skills like Tekkai and use the elasticity of his fruit to even fly in mid-air just like Geppo. Undoubtedly, this goes on to show that Luffy is easily one of the most creative devil fruit users in One Piece.

5 Gear Second

Gear Second is one of the most useful abilities that he has developed over the years. After losing to Aokiji and then falling to the CP9 in Water 7, Luffy realized that he had to grow stronger to protect his crewmates. After witnessing the Soru technique, he realized that by pumping blood faster in his body, he can temporarily dope himself. By doing this, Luffy sweats excessively which ends up evaporating and giving off a steam-like effect.

With blood pumping incredibly fast through his body, he's able to mimic the high-speed movements of the CP9 and increase his offensive powers drastically. By using this technique, Luffy was able to defeat Blueno, one of the strongest members of the CP9, quite easily and even pummel Rob Lucci.

4 Body Of A Giant With Gear Third

Gear Second was not the only ability that Luffy learned during the Enies Lobby arc. Along with gaining an incredible power-up that boosted his speed, Luffy also managed to get a hang of a technique that granted him the body of a giant and, thus, tremendous firepower in the form of Gear Third. By pumping air directly into his bones, he gained access to an ability known as Bone Balloon that forms the basis for this Gear.

By inflating them, he is able to turn his fist into that of a giant and access techniques like Gomu Gomu no Gigant Pistol and Gigant Axe as well. The strength of this Gear was such that even Rob Lucci couldn't anticipate ways to counter it effectively. Once again, by making use of his Devil Fruit in the most unique of ways, Luffy was able to access abilities that normal people wouldn't dare think of. Over time, his usage of Gear Third has improved even further and he doesn't face any drawbacks after accessing its powers.

3 Haki Usage With Gear Fourth

Gear Fourth is a powerful technique that Luffy invented during his two-year time skip training with Rayleigh on Ruskaina. To access this power, Luffy had to learn the usage of Haki and effectively combine it with his Devil Fruit ability. By coating his arms, legs, and the majority of his torso in Color of Arms, Luffy then bites into his forearm and inflates all of his muscles, making them bigger and stronger in the process. At the same time, his elasticity also increases drastically.

Interestingly, despite using the Color of Arms, Luffy is still very rubbery in this form. By effectively combining these two powers, his strength and speed go through the roof. When used against Doflamingo, this Gear was able to overwhelm him completely. Even someone as strong as Charlotte Katakuri was not able to withstand the ferocity of Gear Fourth. What's more, Kaido, one of the Yonko, also faced the brunt of its force and suffered quite a lot of damage.

2 Limitless Imagination In Gear Fifth

During the Wano Country arc, Luffy managed to finally tap into the true power of his Devil Fruit and awaken it. After a near-death encounter with Kaido, Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Mi awakened and it was revealed that its true name is the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika and that it is actually a legendary devil fruit. Despite that, the fruit could only be truly utilized by someone very creative.

It is believed that Luffy's fruit has no limitation other than his own imagination. As such, under an average user, the fruit would be just as average, however, under Luffy, whose imagination is known to be boundless, this fruit is incredibly powerful. With awakening, his fruit grants him even more freedom, a stronger body, and, above all, allows him to incorporate his creativity into his devil fruit powers even more by using Gear Fifth.

1 Shocked Kaido

Perhaps the biggest testament to Luffy's creativity is the fact that he managed to shock Kaido, one of the Four Emperors, with the usage of his Devil Fruit. After awakening his ability, Luffy was able to toy with the Yonko in a manner that was described to be straight out of a comic strip. By stretching and squishing Kaido's body as if it were rubber itself, Luffy was able to fight in an unprecedented manner that even the Yonko could not predict. Furthermore, by delivering a barrage of new attacks on him, Luffy made him wonder who he truly was.

At one point, Kaido exclaimed that he had never seen someone fight with such creativity and freedom at the same time. This in itself is proof enough that Luffy is the most creative devil fruit user in One Piece. What's more, his potential is boundless. Despite Gear 5th being Luffy's peak, there is no limit to his creativity, meaning he can get even better as the story goes on.
