Monkey D. Luffy is the protagonist of Eiichiro Oda's One Piece. Luffy set out on a journey to become the Pirate King in the Great Pirate Era to claim the treasure known as the One Piece left behind by Gol D. Roger. With time, Luffy established a powerful crew and went on to make quite a name for himself. He became the strongest pirate in the East Blue shortly after setting out on his journey and then immediately headed to the Grand Line. There, Luffy learned about the toughness of the sea and grew even further.

In the New World, things have worked out for him pretty similarly and he has, currently, established himself as one of the Four Emperors of the Sea. When it comes to finding the One Piece, Luffy is, without a doubt, the man closest to it, having three of the four Road Poneglyphs. While one would assume that Luffy is extremely close to achieving his dream, that's not entirely the case. In fact, it was recently established that Luffy's dream is not to become the Pirate King at all. Instead, his real dream is something else entirely.

Luffy's Dream

Monkey D Luffy from One Piece episode 1034

Luffy's dream was established long before he even wanted to become a Pirate King. The very first mention of this came shortly after the Summit War arc. Fans got to witness Luffy's very own flashback where he was seen growing up with Ace and Sabo in the Goa Kingdom. There, the three formed a pretty strong bond of brotherhood. Sabo wanted to become a pirate and pursue freedom. Ace, on the other hand, wanted to surpass everyone and make his name known throughout the whole world, surpassing even the legacy of Gol D. Roger, his father. Luffy, meanwhile, had an entirely different dream.

At the time, Luffy certainly did want to become a pirate. This is clear from the fact that Shanks had already entrusted his straw hat to him. However, becoming the Pirate King wasn't what Luffy exclaimed as his dream. While fans didn't hear what it was, the reaction on the faces of Sabo and Ace painted quite a picture. Both of them were stunned at hearing what Luffy actually wanted to achieve. Shortly afterwards, they broke into laughter and called the dream rather childish. Nonetheless, both Sabo and Ace believed that Luffy would one day be able to pull this off.

People Who Know About Luffy's Dream

As mentioned already, Sabo and Ace were some of the first few people to know about Luffy's dream. Before them, Shanks found out about his dream and according to Luffy, he laughed and had tears running down his face. This ties well to Shanks then meeting Rayleigh on Sabaody Archipelago, where he mentioned to him that he found a kid in the East Blue who said the same words as Captain Roger once did. Through Shanks, Rayleigh also found out about Luffy's true dream. It can also be established that Uta, Shanks's daughter, knows about his true dream. Through Ace, Yamato ended up finding out about Luffy's true dream as well.

Yamato also read Oden's journal and realized that Roger once said the same words to Oden and Whitebeard. Recently, in chapter 1060, the Straw Hat Pirates also ended up finding out about Luffy's true dream. Once again, the actual mention of the dream was not made in the chapter. However, the fans did get to see the crew's reaction to Luffy's dream. Essentially, it was confirmed that Luffy's dream goes beyond just Pirate King. Many members of the crew considered the dream to be impossible and others simply labeled it as ridiculous. Nonetheless, every single member of the Straw Hat Pirates believes that Luffy can accomplish this dream.

What Luffy's Dream Could Be

Luffy in One-Piece

While Luffy's dream is quite hard to pinpoint, there are certain hints in the story that fans could use to piece together what it could be. Firstly, it is a dream that is considered to be childish by the likes of Whitebeard yet, at the same time, stunned the likes of Oden. It is also something that makes people laugh, as seen when Ace and Sabo broke into laughter. At the same time, Shanks laughed so much that he had tears flowing down his face. It is also a dream that Luffy can only accomplish by becoming the Pirate King. In one piece 1061, he stated that by becoming the Pirate King, he might have a shot at achieving his dream of his.

This means that achieving great fame and becoming the freest on the seas might just be a necessity for accomplishing this dream. Potentially, Luffy's dream could be to hold the world's largest banquet. After all, Luffy does like banquets and by becoming the Pirate King, he would have tremendous influence all over the world of One Piece. As such, he could have a banquet that includes every single person all over the world, including the many races that he has freed over time.

This could unite the world of One Piece and, at the same time, would require the fall of the Celestial Dragons, tying into the lore of the series as well. On the surface, this looks impossible to achieve. However, if Luffy manages to overthrow the World Government and become the freest man on the seas, freeing several others in the process, this could well be accomplished. Luffy has made allies wherever he has gone so far and in the future, he's likely to make a greater reputation for himself. As such, a dream as grand as partying with the entire world doesn't seem like a stretch for an easygoing character such as him.
