11 Brook was found by The Straw Hat Pirates just after their endeavors at Enies Lobby, and he was floating all alone on an abandoned pirate ship. Brook is the crew's musician, and his primary responsibility is playing tunes on any instrument available to him. Essentially, he's the vibe setter, providing sick jams for parties or slower ballads for those calm moments at sea.

Brook is also known as The Humming Swordsman, wielding his cane sword and running it through various One Piece baddies at top speed. Brook is known to hum the tune of his go-to jam, Bink's Brew, in the heat of battle. The song keeps him calm and collected, something he takes very seriously. Though that is about the only thing Brook can take seriously, and the internet has forever enshrined his goofy nature in glorious meme fashion.

10 Brook's Former Self

Brook's Former Self

Brook was once the vice Captain of the Rumbar Pirates, decades before being discovered by the Straw Hats. He was fully human back then, though he had eaten the Revive-Revive Fruit, which gave him the ability to resurrect upon death. His soul could not find his body in time, however, and it was fully decomposed when he eventually found it.

This is the reason for his skeletal state, where he has remained for over 50 years. The Rumbar pirates were a formidable and brave crew in their day, and they took largely the same path that would eventually be followed by Luffy and his crew.

9 Brook Is A Pervert

Brook's A Pervert

Brook simply cannot meet a new woman without asking to see her underwear, it happens like clockwork. Granted, Brook is not the only member of the Straw Hats that's prone to inappropriate motivations. Sanji is notoriously perverted, and Franky is referred to as an exhibitionist on occasion.

Brook is heckled and often punished by Nami for his continued odd requests. Any time Brook asks, he is met with loud jeers and threats from whomever may be around. Still he persists on, hoping one day to have his dreams fulfilled, no matter how unlikely.

8 Brook's Playlist

Brook's Playlist

Brook's number 1 song of choice is Bink's Brew, a classic sea shanty of pirate eras passed. He performs the song on various instruments, with lyrics or just the instrumental, even slowed down to a ballad at times. His mastery of the song comes from his years of experience as a musician, and the 50 years he spent alone, with that song being all he could hold on to.

Bink's Brew may be played out, much like the Cantina song from Star Wars, but it remains a favorite to fans of Brook due to the strong sentiment it has to him. His role as the crew's musician is a serious one, and Luffy had been wanting a musician on his crew since the near beginning of the series.

7 Brook Is An Old Hippie

Brook Is An Old Hippie

Brook smokes, plays classic jams on his violin, and is always looking for a reason to chill out. He is a hippie down to his visible core, and given his old age over the rest of the crew, that makes him their default deadhead uncle.

People may say he's a bad influence on the younger members, particularly Chopper, but at the end of the day, Brook has some sound advice to offer. What truly is the harm in taking a moment to relax and calm down? This is especially necessary during high stress situations that follow the Straw Hats wherever they go.

6 Brook's Endless Dead Jokes

Brook's Endless Dead Jokes

Brook is quick to make a pun whenever given the opportunity, and he's got one just about every time he opens his mouth. He will joke over his lack of organs like a heart or a stomach, or even just general skeleton puns.

His crew members are often begging him to stop whenever he gets on a roll, but for him, it's just not possible. Comedy is a big coping mechanism for Brook, and with all of his trauma, he's got a lot to cope with. 50 years is a long time to roam a ship that used to be filled with your best friends.

5 Brook Fans Reign Supreme

Brook Fans Reign Supreme

One Piece fans are all too familiar with the years old debate of Zoro versus Sanji. Zoro fans stand by their sword wielding hero, despite his horribly broken internal compass. Fans of Sanji are also quick to support the kicking chef, who can barely control himself around every woman he meets.

Then there's the ever humble Brook fans, who are overjoyed to just see their towering skeletal friend participate. Every joke out of his skull is listened to with attentive ears, and each time he finds himself in combat, these fans are glued to the screen.

4 Brook's Odd Anatomy

Brook's Odd Anatomy

Brook's anatomy raises a lot of questions. He eats food and remarks how delicious it is, despite not having a tongue or even a stomach. Brook experiences hunger with his invisible stomach, and apparently even goes number 2, as this was the first question Luffy had for him when they met.

Brook can also see, despite not having any eyes, which is the subject of many jokes for him. One thing that does make sense about Brook is his need for milk to keep his bones strong and healthy. As a skeleton, milk is practically Brook's life source, and one of the few things he can retain genuine nutrition from.

3 Brook's 45 Degrees Joke

Brook's 45 Degrees Joke

This joke really lands more for Japanese fans, as "45" in Japanese can sound like "shigo" or "after death." Coming from a lumbering talking skeleton, it's a real knee-slapper. The joke occurs when Brook leans forward and presses his head against a wall, creating a perfect 45-degree angle with his body.

The move is also reminiscent of a Michael Jackson dance, which Western audiences often attribute the joke to. Either way, it's hard for One Piece fans not to laugh at the scene, whether they understand the meaning or not.

2 Brook's Skeleton Antics

Brook's Skeleton Antics

Brook has a number of tricks up his sleeves thanks to his body of bones. He can store items in his head, which was a huge shock to everyone, except Luffy, who thought it was awesome. Brook can also continue talking, seeing, and smelling after being decapitated. A handy trick in a world filled with pirates.

Combat with Brook must be difficult. He's constantly cutting up, and he has no vital points to aim for. If an enemy manages to best him and gets a shot at one of his limbs, he will just put it back and keep fighting. A true menace with the skills of a real swordsman, and a fashion sense like no other.

1 Brook's Tragic Past

Brook's Tragic Past

Brook easily has one of the most harrowing pasts among the Straw Hats. He's much older than his crew, currently being about 90 years old. Brook was 38 when his Devil Fruit powers were called to action, and fifty years of solitude would follow after that.

Brook was the vice-captain of the Rumbar pirates, though he became the acting captain after the previous one fell to a severe illness. He led his crew for a short time, though they would all soon meet their fates. After being badly poisoned, the Rumbar pirates joined together on deck to record one final version of Bink's Brew, their swan song for their old friend Laboon. One by one they fell as they played, leaving only Brook before he too was taken by the poison.
