Franky is the Straw Hat Pirates' shipwright in One Piece, but is better known by enemies for his cybernetic body, which confers him a variety of surprising and frightening abilities. It's clear that Eiichiro Oda has a lot of fun figuring out all the different weapons and gadgets that could conceivably be fit into a cyborg body, and this is what makes Franky's fights some of the series' most entertaining. Franky's strange body came about as a result of necessity. As a young man, he was severely injured after being run over by the Puffing Tom, a sea train built by his teacher Tom, which connects several islands in the Grand Line. Franky, already a skilled mechanic, managed to save himself using parts from an abandoned ship, and thus became a cyborg, calling his body Battle Franky 36. He has continued to make periodic modifications to his body ever since.

Many came about while he spent the two-year time skip living in the lab of Dr. Vegapunk, an infamous scientist in the employ of the World Government. After this point, this incarnation of his body becomes Battle Franky 37. Battle Franky 38 is the giant General Franky robot, which is piloted by Franky. Before going into the minutiae of Franky's modifications, it's important to understand how his body works overall. Franky's cybernetics run on a supply of cola, which he must refill regularly, by opening a compartment in his torso. If he runs low on cola, he is unable to use most of his powers, but retains some super strength and durability that his augmentations grant him. Franky can use other liquids as fuel, but they are not as optimal and change both his hairstyle and personality and make him weak. It's also important to note that Franky's front is particularly well-protected against physical attacks, being able to withstand gunfire, but his back, which he cannot reach, is considerably more vulnerable.

Offensive Powers

Franky's body is full of different weapons that he regularly uses in battle. Starting with his mouth, Franky can breathe both fire and a volley of nails. Because his jaws are made of steel, he also has a powerful bite. In his BF36 incarnation, Franky's shoulders had small cannons which, while powerful, would also dislocate them. After the time skip, Franky has made his shoulders much bigger, and they now shoot missiles as well as cannon fire.

As BF36, Franky's arms largely served different functions, with the right being used for melee attacks and the left to fire long-range weapons. Franky's right forearm and hand could detach from his body (a technique called Strong Right), with a chain connecting them, allowing him to use it as a flail or launch it at enemies. The arm below the skin is made of steel, so it is much more powerful. Franky's left arm in this form could fire explosive pellets at a rapid pace from his wrists (Weapons Left). He could also shoot a bullet from his finger with it.

As BF37, Franky's arms are much more massive and purely robotic. He has new and improved versions of the Strong Right and Weapons Left, but his new ultimate attack is the Franky Radical Beam. By making a circle with both hands, Franky is able to fire a concentrated laser beam which releases a massive explosion.

Additional Abilities

Many of Franky's modifications are not purely offensive. As both BF36 and BF37, he has access to a shield with a star on it. As BF36, this is located in his left arm, while with BF37 it comes out by placing both arms together. As BF36, Franky could also use both hands to release an extemely powerful blast of pressurized air, the Coup de Vent. As BF37, he only needs his left arm to do this. That said, the Coup de Vent can only be used sparingly, as it drains Franky's cola reserves very quickly.

Franky's lower body contains three known modifications. As BF 36, he could split the front half of his legs and send them forward, looking like a reverse-centaur. He used this to grab opponents, but the technique is decidedly comedic. Similarly, in a manner much like the Coup de Vent, Franky can inflate his buttocks to massive size and propel himself forward with a massive fart, the Coup de Boo. Like the Coup de Vent, it uses a lot of cola. As BF37, Franky also possesses the ability to turn his legs into tank treads.

BF37 also included two new non-battle modifications. Firstly, Franky now has nipple lights, which he used to help the Straw Hats navigate to Fish-Man Island in while they were in the deep sea. On the purely cosmetic side, Franky now has complete control over his hairstyle, which he can change by pressing down on his nose. Consequently, Franky changes his hairstyle regularly, the most of any character, sometimes several times in a single arc. Franky's new large hands are clunky when performing more intricate functions; as a result he has created a set of smaller hands which can pop out of the larger ones.

As time goes on, Franky will almost certainly reveal new tricks and attacks that he has hidden inside his own body. It would also be fair based on Oda's personality to expect that a lot of them will be hilarious and unconventional. All that can be said for sure is that all the mysteries lying within Franky's body are yet to be solved.
