The Straw Hat Pirates are the main characters of the One Piece series. Led by Monkey D. Luffy, this crew hails from the East Blue and has made quite some waves in the Grand Line over the years. In addition to the incredible story writing that One Piece features, it also has unique character designs which, although they take some time to get used to, are one of its biggest strengths.

The Straw Hat Pirates have some of the best-designed characters ever to come from Eiichiro Oda, the mangaka behind the One Piece series. Although they're all great, some are certainly better-designed than the others.

Updated May 15, 2022, by Rei Penber: The Straw Hat Pirates' designs have changed drastically over the years, especially since Oda's art style has evolved as the series went on. With every arc, Oda makes sure to update the character designs of the Straw Hat Pirates and, at the very least, give them new outfits. With the ongoing Wano Country arc, things were no different, and fans got to see the Straw Hat Pirates don some of the most amazing outfits in the series to date. With that in mind, this list has been updated to include more detail as well as their current designs.

10 Chopper

One Piece Episode of Chopper Plus Bloom in the Winter, Miracle Sakura

Chopper is a reindeer who joined the Straw Hat Pirates during the Drum Island arc of the series. As a reindeer, Chopper is already very unique, but his Devil Fruit makes him even more special. He has the ability to turn into a human and has access to several other transformations as well.

What's more, Chopper can even become a giant monster using Monster Point, showing great diversity in design. While not bad by any means, Chopper takes the last spot on the list. An anthropomorphic reindeer can't help but be a little odd-looking.

Chopper's Onigashima Design

One Piece Tony Tony Chopper Straw Hats Bounty

In the Onigashima section of Wano, Chopper has donned Kabuto armor that he picked shortly before the Raid on the island began. Chopper is seen carrying a sword to signify the samurai spirit, however, of all the crew members, it is quite easily the weakest of all designs.

9 Franky

franky after the timeskip

Franky is the shipwright of the Straw Hat Pirates, who joined Luffy on his adventure after the Enies Lobby arc. Franky is a cyborg, which makes him quite unique in the crew.

Oda designed Franky quite carefully and everything about him, from his hairstyle to the way he dresses, is refreshing. Unfortunately, his post-timeskip design isn't nearly as good. Nonetheless, Franky remains a fan favorite.

Franky's Onigashima Design

Franky's Samurai Costume

For the Onigashima Raid, Franky seems to have made quite a few changes to his body. To begin with, his arms look more colorful, along with his shoulders. At the same time, Franky wears a helmet with a crescent moon on it, which signifies that he's an ally of the Kozuki. Overall, Franky's design is decent.

8 Jinbe

One Piece Straw Hats Jinbe Bounty Wano

Jinbe is a blue whale shark Fishman, and is the most recent addition to the ranks of the Straw Hat Pirates. Being a Fishman, Jinbe looks different from the rest of the crew members and stands out immediately.

His shark-like face, along with his giant body, fit perfectly with the yakuza theme that defines his character design. Jinbe often dresses like a Yakuza boss, which further adds to his incredible style as a pirate. He hasn't shown much change after the timeskip — which is for the best.

Jinbe's Onigashima Design

One Piece Jinbe

Jinbe joined the crew while the Straw Hat Pirates were on their way to Onigashima. Since this was the very first time he joined up with them officially, Jinbe's Onigashima design is actually his first official Straw Hat design. As always, Jinbe appears to be wearing a kimono with a coat on his back. While Jinbe's design is nothing too special, it does fit him perfectly.

7 Brook

One Piece Brook Soul King

Brook remains one of One Piece's most unique character designs, if not the most unique. Long ago, he was a member of the Rumbar Pirates, but ended up dying in an enemy attack. Having eaten the Yomi Yomi no Mi, Brook returned to life.

Sadly, his body was just bones by the time his soul found it in the Florian Triangle, and so he became a talking skeleton. Brook's skull jokes go perfectly with his physical look, and his skill with a sword only adds to his incredible skeleton design.

Brook's Onigashima Design

On Onigashima, Brook switched up his outfit quite a bit and went for a more suave look. He wore a black vest and cravat and topped it off it a hat. With his soul solid at his side, Brook became a menace in the Onigashima section of the arc.

6 Nami

One Piece - Namis Outfit During Enies Lobby And In The Stampede Film

Nami is the navigator of the Straw Hat Pirates, who joined them during the Orange Town Arc. Nami is an orange-haired girl who was raised by Bellemere, who owned a tangerine farm. She also sports a tangerine and a pinwheel tattoo on her left shoulder.

Clearly, her design compliments her backstory quite well, with her hair matching the color of the fruit she grew up cultivating. With time, her physique matured quite a bit and her hair grew longer. Nami is certainly one of the very best-designed characters by Eiichiro Oda.

Nami's Onigashima Design

Nami Wano

Nami wore a kunoichi outfit for the first half of the Wano Country arc, however, for the Onigashima section of the story, she switched to battle gear instead. Nami decided to wear a red kunoichi outfit with armor on top, showing that she was ready for anything thrown her way in the arc.

5 Roronoa Zoro

One Piece Roronoa Zoro Nitoryu Pound Ho

The swordsman of the Straw Hat Pirates, Zoro Monkey D. Luffy's right-hand man and an incredibly powerful pirate. As a swordsman with a Bushido, Zoro is quite stern at all times and his design portrays that very well, with his stern expression and, post-timeskip, a scar running through his eye.

Although his green hair might not be the best thing about him, it certainly fits him. Zoro's best attire sees him don a dark green coat held by his haramaki at his waist. He carries three swords, a mark of his fighting prowess.

Zoro's Onigashima Design

For Onigashima, Zoro switched back to his original design. However, instead of his usual green coat, Zoro changed into a black coat instead. He also wore a red sash across his waist whilst his Haramaki held the coat on his body.

4 Sanji

One Piece - Sanjis Outfit In Water 7 And During The Whole Cake Island Arc

The kind-hearted cook for the Straw Hat Pirates, Sanji began tagging along on Luffy's journey after the events of the Baratie arc. Sanji is a chivalrous person, and his design showcases that very well.

Sanji's blonde hair falls over one of his eyes, covering it in completely and adding to the mystery surrounding his character. He also smokes quite a lot, which also adds to the enigmatic appeal of his character. After the timeskip, Sanji's hair changed slightly and he grew more facial hair, making him look more mature than before.

Sanji's Onigashima Design

Sanji in new suit

Sanji wore one of his very best outfits for the Onigashima Raid. As always, he wore a suit into battle, however, for this section of the arc, he decided to wear a maroon suit instead of his usual blue or black ones. At the same time, Sanji also wore gloves which added a whole new layer of coolness to his character.

3 Usopp

One Piece Usopp Wielding Sling Shot

The sniper of the Straw Hat Pirates, Usopp hails from the East Blue's Syrup Village. Although he might not be everyone's favorite, his design is certainly among the best. Compared to the rest of the characters, he is slightly more tanned and sports woolly hair. Usopp's persona is based on lying, and his remarkably long nose reflects this trait.

Before the timeskip, Usopp wore overalls, which might not have been his best design. Post-timeskip, though, he has completely transformed. Usopp now has some facial hair and sports sniper goggles around his neck. The fact that he has put on more muscle just makes his design all the better.

Usopp's Onigashima Design

Usopp from One Piece

While Usopp's post timeskip design is quite good, for Onigashima, he didn't have one of his best outfits on. Although Usopp wore his usual yellow pants, he topped them off with a multi-colored armor plate. He also wore brown gloves and a protective headgear. While not bad, Usopp's Onigashima design was rather underwhelming.

2 Nico Robin

Nico Robin Things You Should Know

The archaeologist of the Straw Hat Pirates, Nico Robin snuck into the Going Merry after the Alabasta arc has been a member of the crew ever since. Just like Usopp, Robin is a bit more tanned than the rest of the crew, at least in the anime. When introduced, she had shoulder-length hair, which has grown over time.

Robin resembles her mother greatly, with a a very defined nose and brown eyes. She often has some of the very best outfits in the crew, with her cowboy outfit from the Alabasta arc being one of her best.

Robin's Onigashima Design

Nico Robin Onigashima Outfit

As always, Nico Robin is one of the best-looking Straw Hats even in the Onigashima section of the Wano Country arc. For the Raid, Robin chose to wear a white kunoichi outfit with a daffodil pattern all over it. To make things more special, she donned a black cape over her shoulders to truly look like the elite pirate that she is.

1 Monkey D. Luffy

Luffy playing with Straw Hat

The captain of the crew, Luffy's character design remains one of the simplest yet the best in the crew. Luffy has short black hair and features a scar under his left eye, which he inflicted on himself. He has unusually round eyes; however, they seem rather fitting for his energetic, enthusiastic nature. Luffy wears a red vest, short trousers, and sandals.

The most important part of his design is certainly the Straw Hat that he received from Shanks — as this was the inspiration behind the name of his pirate crew. After the timeskip, Luffy has grown a lot more muscular and he now wears a long-sleeved red cardigan and a yellow sash around his waist, similar to one of Boa Hancock's outfits. He also had a massive scar across his chest, given to him by Admiral Akainu. In Wano, Luffy has now donned an emperor coat, similar to the one that Shanks wears.

Luffy's Onigashima Design

Luffy Gear Fifth One Piece

Luffy's character design got even better in the Onigashima section of the Wano Country arc. Although Luffy's cardigan stayed the same, he wore orange shorts and a purple sash as a tribute to Kozuki Oden. What's more, Luffy decided to wear an emperor coat in this section of the arc, showing that he's well and truly Kaido's equal.
