A series that's renowned for its longevity, One Piece has been around since 1997, with an anime following soon after in 1999. Following the adventures of Luffy and his gang of Straw Hat Pirates on their way to find the mysterious titular treasure, One Piece has become one of the most popular manga and anime series of all time, and it's a series that just keeps going. And naturally, as all popular things are destined to be, One Piece has been adapted into a plethora of video games over the years to very mixed results.

Out of the 43 One Piece video games that have released, just 11 of those have come to North America via an official release. So, while fans have plenty of One Piece games to sink their teeth into, they may need to find some alternate means to acquire the vast majority of the franchise. Thankfully though, only a handful of One Piece games are actually worth playing, so North American fans shouldn't feel like they're missing out too much.

One of the more fondly remembered One Piece video game series is the One Piece: Grand Battles line-up of games. First releasing in 2001 for the original PlayStation, the One Piece: Grand Battle series sees players duke it out as their favorite characters in a 3D fighting game. While the series never reviewed all that well, with critics disliking the sluggish pace, controls, and lack of innovation between entries, One Piece: Grand Battle still holds a special place in the hearts of some players since it was their first exposure to the series on a console.

One of the more elusive One Piece gaming series for North Americans, only the first and last One Piece: Unlimited Adventure games released in the US. Thankfully, US fans didn't miss too much. For the most part, One Piece: Ultimate Adventure is a pretty lackluster adventure game series, where players solve basic puzzles and participate in mundane combat scenarios with barebones mechanics. That being said, the series' visuals are pretty great across the board, managing to capture the energetic atmosphere of the anime and manga quite well.

Despite receiving pretty middling reviews across the board, the One Piece: Pirate Warriors series is probably the best of the bunch. Being developed by Omega Force, One Piece: Pirate Warriors borrows a great deal from the Dynasty Warriors series, translating that addictive hack-and-slash gameplay quite well to the One Piece universe. Though the series isn't the most innovative gaming franchise out there, each subsequent entry does boast some improvements over its predecessor, making the most recent One Piece: Pirate Warriors game worth checking out for sure.

The vast majority of One Piece video game adaptations don't belong to a particular series. Instead, they're a mixed bag of RPGs, beat-em-ups, party games, and action-adventures. While most of these games are also considered a little underwhelming, there are a few standouts that do a great job of transporting players to an authentic recreation of the One Piece world. One Piece: Grand Adventure is one such standout, releasing for the GameCube and PS2 in 2006 and delivering a solid 3D fighter that acts as a spiritual successor to the One Piece: Grand Battle series. The recently released One Piece: Odyssey is also another standout title, giving One Piece fans a surprisingly deep and engaging original story with a fun and complex battle system.
