The Godfather remains one of the most influential and beloved films ever made, forever changing the gangster genre and American cinema at large. But less known is the turbulent story of how it came to be, and this will finally be revealed in Paramount Plus' new prestige series The Offer.

Paramount has released an exciting trailer, teasing the tense intersection of Hollywood politics and organized crime that The Godfather's production had to endure. Similar to another infamous Francis Ford Coppola production, Apocalypse Now, the production of The Godfather seems nearly as intense as the Corleone family struggles themselves.

The Offer has a stacked ensemble cast, including Miles Teller, Matthew Goode, Juno Temple, Giovanni Ribisi, Dan Fogler, Colin Hanks, and Lou Ferrigno. In the director's chair is Rocketman's Dexter Fletcher, and the head writer is Michael Tolkin, best known for classics like The Player and Deep Impact. And as a seal of approval, Godfather producer Albert S. Ruddy is an executive producer, so they're sure to be working with the best possible stories and secrets regarding this historic production.

Visually the series absorbs itself in Godfather iconography, from emulating the classic logo, to the accurate 1970s costuming and set design. One could almost forget this is a true story and only see it as a canonical Godfather spin-off. But that seems to be the idea, as the truth is always stranger than fiction, and if done right, The Offer could end up a thrilling companion piece to the original classic.

Though of course, one has to wonder if The Offer can compete with the overloaded streaming market. For one, Paramount Plus remains one of the least popular streaming platforms, and even if this series is great, it's going to take a lot more to boost subscriptions. There's also been a lot of Hollywood-centric films and miniseries lately, and after the umpteenth Ryan Murphy or Quentin Tarantino project, it's uncertain if another can dominate the public discussion.

But despite all of those risks, The Offer could very well end up a must-watch TV series for the new year. With its fascinating true stories, told by a talented cast and crew, this might be an Offer we can't refuse.

The Offer will arrive on Paramount Plus on April 28, 2022.
