The story starts where the last game ended, so it won't be a surprise for the fans. Although a fast recap couldn't hurt, as Oddworld: New N' Tasty was released in 2014, so most players might've forgotten the entire story.

And because the game starts where developers last left it, players will find themselves in the middle of a revolution, fighting for societal change, making it an action-filled high-stakes story.

7 Visuals And Character Designs

The visual world of Soulstorm was made completely from scratch, as the developers wanted to build up the design from the ground up. In characters, fans will definitely find some features that will make them recognisable, but other than that, fans should brace themselves for loads of changes including characters, locations, and overall visuals.

And apart from it being mostly a 2D sidescrolling game, developers have added a 3D effect to the entire design and graphics, and the levels are all multiple layered, making it a much more complex experience for players.

6 Locations

A lot of locations will be familiar for fans, but all locations were reimagined, having a newer and grander design. With new graphics and better design, the locations will pop right out of the screen, grabbing players by the gut.

Series creator Lorne Lanning explained the reimagines story and design in an interview, stating that with this game, they could tell a much deeper, darker, sinister story, giving meat to the original.

5 Next-Gen Gaming

Oddworld: Soulstorm is a huge leap from the rest of the franchise. Both in graphics, and overall style, but now developers also used the next-gen technologies that came with the new PS5. The biggest example is the implementation of 3D audio throughout the game, which puts players right in the middle of the action.

And of course, the DualSense controller will have a huge part in the gameplay as well. With its adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, which will allow players to "feel Abe's heartbeat as he tries to save his followers". Also, when the character struggles, the adaptive triggers will give more of a resistance to make the struggle seem more real.

4 Variety In Gameplay

While the gameplay itself relies on the sidescrolling style, developers have added a few twists to keep it interesting. Like apart from platforming, there will be puzzles, heavy combat, and stealth that players must use during the game.

Abe's ability to possess character's will returns to Soulstorm, so players can count on using this handy skill throughout the game as well, maybe even in more scenarios than in the last game.

3 Crafting & Scavenging

The world of Soulstorm will be full of loot. Abe will have to scavenge bodies and entire locations to find resources and open up cases and lockers. These resources can be traded to other items through the vending machines, and these items can help a lot throughout the gameplay, so players will rely on this ability greatly.

Using everything Abe has found, and everything from the vending machines, players will be able to craft items and weapons for various uses. With this crafting ability, players can customize items, and upgrade some as well.

2 It's Very Different

This is something a lot of fans don't care for, but even those who are open to these changes need some time to get used to the game. Fans who loved the older games are especially disappointed with the outcome because this game has a much faster pace, seemingly fewer cutscenes, and while it's too early to judge, fans are worried because of all the changes in feel.

1 Reviews Are Extreme

Fans of the earlier games are ruthless when it comes to Soulstorm. This can be good for those who like them, are invested in the "retro" games that came before this one. It is, in fact, a huge leap from its predecessors.

But for the players who are new to this universe, or who are open toward change in the right directions, the game definitely deserves a shot nonetheless. Lannin himself stated: "The audience is absolutely ruthless, and we should never suspect for a second that they're not." So for players thinking of investing in the game, tread lightly through the review before judging prematurely.
