The surrealist, cinematic platformer series Oddworld has been a staple on PlayStation consoles since 1997's Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee.  After releasing 2014's ground-up remake, Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty!, Oddworld Inhabitants began developing the follow-up Oddworld: Soulstorm, a reimagining of 1998's Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus. That game received a new trailer during today's Sony PlayStation 5 showcase, giving fans a good idea of what they can expect.

Oddworld: Soulstorm's trailer begins with a cold open heralding the return of series' antagonist Molluck, an industrialist and member of the Glukkon race that subjugates the Mudokons who serve as a workforce liberated by protagonist Abe. Oddworld Inhabitants Creative Director Lorne Lanning, who also voices Abe and Molluck in New 'n' Tasty! according to the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), then appears to say that in this upcoming game, "The stakes are higher, the threats are larger, (and) the obstacles are more devious."

Lanning lauds the PS5 for helping to make these raised stakes possible, though Oddworld: Soulstorm was only announced for PS5 in June 2020 during Sony's "Future of Gaming" livestream. What follows for the rest of the trailer is a montage of Abe leading huge groups of Mudokons through dangerous factories intercut with a few high-definition cutscenes.

The primary development studio says this is "the biggest game we have ever created" in a blog post that went live today, describing how Soulstorm will take advantage of graphical improvements and features on the PS5 compared to the PS4 version. For example, the game will use 3D audio to put players "in the middle of the action," as well as simulate Abe's heart palpitations and struggles through the DualSense Controller's haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

Another major facet of the game will be its moral decisions, which Oddworld Inhabitants says will have real-time consequences that accrue throughout the game and affect Abe's spiritual powers. Some examples of this can be seen in previous trailers for Soulstorm, and today's shows Abe leading Mudokons onto a bridge where they are crushed by rolling spike traps.

While fans of the series likely appreciate the chance to see new gameplay in this re-imagining, no concrete details about its release were confirmed by Sony. Oddworld: Soulstorm was first announced in 2016, and though no official release date has been provided as of yet, the blog post says its development team should have an update they are looking forward to sharing "very, very soon."

Oddworld: Soulstorm is in development for PC, PS4, and PS5.
