As it stands, the Oculus Quest is less powerful than the Oculus Rift, allowing the Oculus Rift to run various apps and games that the Oculus Quest cannot, despite both sporting a great selection of VR games. However, with Oculus Link, Facebook is aiming to fix this issue by enabling Oculus Quest owners to play Rift games.

With the Oculus Rift, owners are able to play more demanding content via external components, given the owner has a PC that can live up to the task. Meanwhile, Oculus Quest owners are unable to do so due to design limitations, though it is able to play the Star Wars VR games, like Vader Immortal. In either regard, a solution has come up in Oculus Link, which, according to CEO of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg, makes the Oculus Quest "basically a Rift now, too.”

Oculus Link, provided via a software update, gives Oculus Quest owners the ability to set up the VR headset by connecting it to a PC through a USB Type-C cable. From there, Oculus Quest owners can simply play Oculus Rift games as if the Oculus Quest, which could be the future of VR, were a Rift itself.

The Oculus Quest had been missing out on some unique content. Some of the Oculus Rift's standout games include DiRT Rally, Chronos, Edge of Nowhere, Echo VR, and Robo Recall. Along with titles like these, it might be presumed that Xbox One and backwards compatible Xbox 360 games can be streamed on the Oculus Quest.

Oculus fans and, especially, Oculus Quest owners will likely be ecstatic about this. To close the gap between the two groups appears to be a smart move on Facebook's and Oculus' part and may well increase sales for the Oculus Quest.

The PlayStation VR headset tends to be the dominant product right now in the virtual reality market, over both the Oculus and HTC Vive. While it's unclear if this decision alone to make Rift games playable with Oculus Quest will radically change this dynamic, it may bring a broader appeal to, at the very least, the Oculus Quest.
