Octopath Traveler, the classic-style JRPG with high-definition visuals matched with 16-bit character models, finally has a release date. As announced during the Nintendo Direct that took place earlier today, Octopath Traveler will launch worldwide on July 13, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.

Not only did Nintendo reveal Octopath Traveler's release date, but it also pulled the curtain back on two more of the game's protagonists: Tressa and Alfyn. Tressa is a merchant who has the Purchase ability that allows her to buy items from almost every NPC in the game. Purchase will allow Tressa to obtain items that can't be bought in stores, so it should prove to be a rather useful ability.

Alfyn, meanwhile, is an apothecary. His ability is Inquire, and it will allow him to learn more information about the NPCs he interacts with. In turn, this will give him more information on the game world, including the location of hidden treasures and items.

Nintendo also offered more information on the job system in Octopath Traveler. Players will be able to purchase skills in any order they want, and will have access to any skill tied to their job. Like similar games, jobs will also determine what kind of weapons and armor players can equip as well. However, at some point in the game, players will be able to assign a second job class to their characters, which will let them mix and match skills and equipment.

Between the job system and 16-bit inspired art style, it sounds like Octopath Traveler is something that fans of classic JRPGs will enjoy. And luckily for JRPG fans who were intrigued by the game's appearance during the Nintendo Direct, there is currently a demo available on the eShop that should give them a better idea of what to expect.

Anyone planning on downloading the demo should note that Square Enix plans on using feedback from it to make changes to the final game, which should result in a more well-rounded product. If Square Enix truly does take fan feedback to heart, then there's no reason why Octopath Traveler shouldn't live up to its reputation as one of the most exciting Switch exclusives of 2018.
