Octopath Traveler is a recent JRPG that stunned audiences upon release with its visual style and fresh take on the saturated genre. The game was initially a Nintendo Switch exclusive that has since been ported to PC, Xbox, and even the Google Stadia.

One feature of Octopath Traveler that sets it apart from other similar games is its intuitive and deep Job system. Each character starts with a default class, called a Job in Octopath Traveler, but eventually characters are able to pick up additional Jobs to create hybrid classes. While jobs are generally pretty balanced, there are some that are clearly better than others.

12 12. Apothecary

Octopath Traveler Shrine Apothecary

Alfyn Greengrass is the default Apothecary character in Octopath Traveler, with the unique ability to Concoct. This lets Alfyn mix ingredients to create a party effect, including healing, reviving, and buffing allies.

By himself, Alfyn is very versatile and can multiclass effectively into lots of options. Apothecary, however, is not a great secondary job.

11 11. Scholar

Octopath Traveler Shrine Scholar

The default Scholar character in Octopath Traveler is Cyrus Albright, with multiple abilities that damage enemies all at once. The Scholar is a master of the elements, able to use fire, ice, lightning, and other elements when multiclassing.

The Scholar is, however, almost totally outclassed by another caster available in the game, the Sorcerer.

10 10. Warrior

Octopath Traveler Shrine Warrior

Olberic Eisenberg is the default Warrior character in Octopath Traveler, with the ability to Bolster Defense. With this, the Warrior provides defense for both himself and his allies, which can be the deciding factor in tough fights.

The Warrior job is a basic one and well-rounded enough to work with just about any other secondary class.

9 9. Starseer

Octopath Traveler Shrine Starseer

The Starseer is a secret job in Octopath Traveler only unlockable by traveling to the Western Wispermill Flats and defeating the Job Shrine's guardian Steorra, Starseer. The Starseer job is mainly a support role that uses Divination-themed abilities to boost allies' abilities and defenses.

It's a pretty useful job to have represented in the party, but it's a little bit underwhelming in terms of power level.

8 8. Cleric

Octopath Traveler Shrine Cleric

The default Cleric character in Octopath Traveler is Ophilia Clement, and the job is mainly focused on healing allies. That's not to say the class is without combat potential, but it's much more limited compared to other jobs.

The Cleric is a very good standard addition to any team composition, with the almost single-handed ability to keep the party alive.

7 7. Dancer

The Dancer job in Octopath Traveler is one taken by Primrose Azelhart, with the ability to provide stat boosts to allies as well as Allure NPCs in the world. This passive ability comes later on in the game, but it opens up secret areas and new locations not usually visitable.

The Dancer is a very powerful support-focused class, with the only downside being that most of her abilities can only target a single ally.

6 6. Thief

Octopath Traveler Shrine Thief

The default Thief character in Octopath Traveler is Therion, with the ability to Steal as well as equip two weapons. The Steal ability gives Therion a random item from an NPC, but with a chance to fail that can damage your reputation.

It's a very powerful class, especially with the secondary Dancer or Hunter job, and one that will come in handy to finish off enemies quickly.

5 5. Runelord

Octopath Traveler Shrine Runelord

The Runelord is one of the secret unlockable jobs in Octopath Traveler. To unlock this job, one must travel to the Shrine of the Runeblade near Everhold and defeat its guardian Balogar, the Runeblade.

The Runelord's main strength comes from the ability to place Runes on an ally's weapons and improve the power of the party all at once. It's one of the better combat-focused support classes, and works well as a secondary class for just about any job.

4 4. Hunter

Octopath Traveler Shrine Hunter

The default Hunter in Octopath Traveler is H'aanit, with the very Pokemon-like ability to Capture enemies. The Hunter can later release these enemies to fight for her, and their ability to use bows and axes makes them a worthy damage dealer.

It's a job that utilizes both AoE and single-target attacks to whittle down enemies' health quickly. H'aanit serves best when given the Warmaster secondary skill, as it massively increases the Hunter's attack.

3 3.Warmaster

The Warmaster is a secret job in Octopath Traveler unlockable by traveling to the Shrine of the Warbringer near Riverford and defeat its guardian Winnehild, Warbringer. The Warmaster can wield all weapons, and its moveset is based entirely around dealing massive damage with those weapons.

It's possibly the most useful secondary job for every physical attack dealer in the game, as it gives a huge 12% boost to the character's physical damage.

2 2. Merchant

Octopath Traveler Shrine Merchant

The Merchant in Octopath Traveler is a default class portrayed in Tressa Colzione, with the ability to Hire Help and buy unique, not-found-anywhere-else items from NPCs. She's also able to provide discounts for the party, albeit not reliably.

The Merchant is a very well-rounded job with fantastic abilities both in-combat and out-of-combat. It's a great secondary job for any character specifically for its ability to bring in NPCs to the battle.

1 1. Sorcerer

The Sorcerer is a secret job in Octopath Traveler that is unlockable by traveling to the Shrine of the Archmagus near Duskbarrow and defeating the Shrine's guardian Dreisang, the Archmagus.

It's easily the most powerful secondary secret job in the game for magic users, and its abilities complement and improve upon the skills of magic users greatly as well. It's a must-unlock for any player with a focus on the use of magic against every enemy at once.
