Fans of Square Enix’s old-school RPG Octopath Traveler have had to wait longer than expected for the next entry in the series, the free-to-play mobile prequel Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent. Fortunately, the wait will be ending soon (for Japanese fans, at least), and in anticipation of that, Square has released a new trailer for it.

After over a year of radio silence, Square Enix finally announced the release date for Champions of the Continent earlier this month. Only a few weeks remain before players can dive into a new single-player story set to provide them with a deeper look into the continent of Orsterra. Whereas the previous game revolved around the stories of its eight protagonists, the prequel will feature a gacha-style system where players create a custom party out of the heroes they collect, so this time around the narrative focus will be on the villains.

Champions of the Continent will see players go up against three different antagonists who are conquering Orsterra through “wealth,” “power,” and “fame.” The first one is what Square Enix highlighted this week with a new story trailer centered on Helminia, the “Witch of Greed.” The trailer offers brief glimpses at cutscenes illustrating how Helminia uses her fortune to control her piece of the continent, culminating in gameplay footage of the eventual boss battle against her.

As this and other recent trailers have shown, the mobile game will feature similar turn-based combat to the original Octopath Traveler. For the time being, though, it’s unknown if this and the rest of the game will be released outside of Japan, but given how well Octopath Traveler sold back when it launched, the chances of the prequel making it to other regions seem good.

Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent will be released for iOS and Android devices in Japan on October 28.
