Multiple games were announced today at Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase, including State of Decay 3 from developer Undead Labs. But perhaps one of the most exciting announcements is the next single-player RPG Avowed from the acclaimed studio Obsidian Entertainment.

Obsidian has been around for a very long time. The studio began as a collective of developers who left Black Isle Studios, the creators of the original Fallout and Fallout 2, before its closure. Obsidian then went on to make the sequel to BioWare’s beloved Star Wars Knights of the Republic. The studio made it big when it released the incredibly well-received Fallout: New Vegas. Obisdian’s success continued with South Park: The Stick of Truth, and last year’s The Outer Worlds.

But today, Obsidian announced its next RPG, a new game called Avowed. According to the game’s new website, Avowed is, “Obsidian Entertainment's next epic, first-person RPG set in the fantasy world of Eora.” Eora is the world in which the Pillars of Eternity series takes place, another franchise Obsidian has created in its very busy history. Pillars of Eternity's first release was in 2015, with its sequel Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire releasing in 2018.

Not much is known about the game as the trailer was rather short, but it opens on war being waged with a narrator speaking of how the world of Eora has always known war. The narrator then asks the viewer to, “face the monsters our sins have born,” and asks, “is an oath worth the weight of a crown?” The trailer briefly shows the assumed protagonist taking up a sword and wielding a spell before cutting to the title of Avowed.

Obsidian has been keeping extra busy, as this the only game Obsidian showed today. The studio also showed a new trailer for Grounded, a first-person multiplayer survival-adventure game that looks to be a mix of Fortnite, Left 4 Dead, and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.

Obsidian also announced a new expansion for The Outer Wilds, dubbed The Outer Worlds: Peril on Gorgon which will be coming to Xbox Series X as well as Xbox One, PC, and PS4.

Other big news from today's Xbox Games Showcase includes an announcement of a new Fable coming to Xbox Series X and an in-depth look at Halo Infinite.

Avowed does not yet have a release window.
