Return of the Obra Dinn is a unique title created by Lucas Pope. First revealed in 2014 as a follow-up to the successful Papers Please, Return of the Obra Dinn is a mind-bending puzzle game with a visual aesthetic that may be unlike any other. It launched in 2018, and recently the developer tweeted out some frustration about his title in connection with Sony.

After being considered one of the best indie games of 2018 by many, now seems like a good a time as any to discount Obra Dinn on PS4. However, Pope said Sony has denied his request to discount the game, which isn't the first time this has happened to indie developers on the PS4.

According to Pope's tweets, Return of the Obra Dinn, which reviewed well upon release, is going on sale for its anniversary "on most platforms," but Sony purportedly denied the request on PS4. If this were a one-off occurrence it may have just been a small, contained bummer, but Sony has apparently been putting a stop to sales for some time.

Once the news that Sony denied Pope's request broke, a Resetera user went digging through Twitter for similar situations. Indie developer Michael Hicks stated that his game, Pillar, was allowed to be discounted in Europe, but not North America. @LucBernard tweeted about his game not being allowed to be discounted on Vita. Meanwhile, French solo game developer @COWCATGames has tweeted out frustration with not being able to take advantage of Sony sales, claiming that 90 percent of revenue comes from those opportunities.

Mike Rose of No More Robots claimed that small indies don't sell on PS4, stating that only five percent of sales for one of their games came from PS4, nowhere near the same success as on the Switch and Xbox One. Additionally, the game launched with a discount on the Switch, but that was denied with the PS4 version of the game, as Sony told him that it was "too busy" to accommodate that request.

During the transition to next-gen for Sony, it is possible that requests for discounts and things of that nature have fallen to the wayside, and that could be the case for Pope and Return of the Obra Dinn. However, examples of indie developers being left hanging this way go all the way back to at least 2015. Hopefully, these types of issues can improve moving forward for the Japanese gaming company.

Return of the Obra Dinn is available on Mac, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
